Hi folks, a query about the ammeter reading on my French 1923 T. When the engine is running at the speed that the ammeter ought to show that it is charging, it shows discharge, any ideas please? The battery is 6 volt, and the negative is connected to the chassis. Is it doing any harm to run it like that?

Ian
With the engine NOT running what does the ammeter read?
With the engine NOT running turn on the headlamps and tell us what the ammeter reads?

Hi Ron
Thanks for that, at the moment I am in England and do not return to my house in France until Sunday (2nd Sept). Once there and with the car again I will check what you are advising and reply.

Ron is perfectly right.

Just to give you advance notice, if the ammeter reads zero with nothing on or running, reads positive when you turn on the lights, motor not running, and reads negative when the engine runs, no lights, then it's a simple matter that the ammeter is connected backwards. Reverse the two leads to the ammeter, and you're good to go.

Other permutations can indicate completely different problems. Ron's the man who can help you best, with complete information.
