As I was taking the cross piece off from the hand brake assembly I noted that the previous assembler had the caps and the bolts and nuts that hold the caps very loose . They were cotter pined but sloppy to the point of the bolts jiggling and the caps loose. That doesnt seem right .... what is "tight" vs. "too tight " ?
just stop short of twisting them off.
Get them as tight as you can and still get the cotter pin through the hole.
Now I'm not talking about the frame mounts , but the inner caps near the center dip...........
Come to think , I think those are the caps for the AC or Rocky Mountain brakes..... I have to look tomorrow ...at any rate , the question still stands.
Dan, if they are for accessory brakes, that cross shaft is usually able to move independently of the Ford cross shaft, and so the caps locate the shaft but allow it to turn on the Ford shaft. At least, that's how my Bennett brakes are.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Allan... This car is a constant learning project..so different than any car i have owned in the past . Throw in the accessory items and 80 plus years of ownership and you have a lot of variables how something was put together or maintained . I did find one really good picture here in a search which showed a third washer placed in between each end of the cap which allowed some play but let you tighten the bolt and nut all the way . Mine didn't have that .... and was so loose the only thing keeping the nut on was the cotter pins.
see attached photo for the parts I am referring too
for anyone who doesn't have Rocky Mountain brakes.
