I was asked for pictures of my spare tire carrier.

The only hard part was shutting off the torch and grabbing the tools fast enough to mash the rivets before they cooled off too much. The part of the job that took longest was filing the square holes for carriage bolts. I think the total cost was about $12, with $9.04 of that being for the steel.
Steve,
I have had the same problem of the work loosing the heat while I turn off the torch and put it down.
I made up a holder out of 2" exhaust tubing. I can virtually throw the torch at it and deal with the job without having to turn the torch off.
Note that the drop sheet is only there for the photo and that there is a small "wall" of loose firebricks in front of the hot end.
In fact I made two of them, the one shown is fixed to my welding bench and the other one has a large flat base that I can clamp to my bench if I am working on the other side of the workshop.
Gavin H,
I LIKE IT! I need to make one. I am always heating and bending stuff. I really need to get the forge I have set up. Thank you.
Drive carefully, and enjoy, W2
Steve,
Why not heat the hole, drop in the cold carriage bolt and rap it firmly with a hammer? Unless the steel is real thick, the shoulders of the carriage bolt, should square up the round hole.
I wish I still had use of the metal shop I worked for. I need to make one myself. I think Id like to use an old spindle so I could mount the whose wheel assembly up there for looks. Fix it in place, I think it would look nice. Keep it up steve and your gonna get orders from all over the country.
Brandon: Oh, great. I don't have enough to do.
Gavin: Great idea! I'll have one of those the next time I do any riveting or bending.
Hello Steve Jelf:
Well like me you should have a hat on, as the shin on the top of your head, requires me to put on my welding goggles. GRIN HA

Great idea Gavin! I usually hang mine from a wire but I like the bench-top model. All I need to do is find bench space.
I found a few of these in a bunch of parts I just purchased.
So ... the larger one is the top that bolts to a rounded portion of the body ... and the bottom (missing leather straps), bolts to the running board?
Steve,
I'm really lazy. Is there a possibility of you posting measurements?
I really like your "no extra holes" (in the car) design.
Dennis, that's correct. The upper part uses the 2 bolts for the windshield stantions and the lower small bracket bolts to the running board. I held the stuff up to my 23 touring and looks like it would fit perfectly. I'm not sure if these would fit pre or post 23-25 vehicles.
Kenny, Dennis, I have the same tire carrier that I removed from my 1916 to make room for a toolbox.
Hmm .. that's right where my tool box is now, too. BUt ... maybe when I get the pickup done .. I could use one like that. I am making an extended bed, though, so there 'should' be 'just enough' room for an under-bed spare tire mount. We'll see.
Michael, I have an afternoon class. I'll take measurements later.
Sam, yours does look identical. Any idea where it came from?
Kenny, Do not know where it came from. The carrier was on my T when I got it in Jan this year. It was on the T when it was listed on ebay in 2002.
