Has anyone had any experience using the nylon camshaft gear that is available from some of the parts suppliers?

I have about 5000 miles on mine. Seems to work OK.

Bryan, there are 212 threads about this on this website. If you use the search function you can find every one of them. I don't mean this in an offensive way. It's no different than asking what oil we use. Try the search function, you will get your answers faster.

Royce, the nylon timing gear in my Suburban went to pieces at about 24 thou, so you have another 19,000 to go.

A google search is faster. Type Search MTFCA: "nylon timing gear".

Steve, you werent holding your mouth right.I finally, out of fear of being broke down on the road side, changed the 1 in my chevy wagon at 287,000 miles.I had to change the power steering pump and decided to go ahead and take a few minutes to check the timeing gear.I touched it and got cut from the sharp aluminum that was under the nylon. It was sharp as a knife. And I had just been on I40 the day before running 70 with traffic.:-)Luck,that is all I can call it.
But,I aint putting 1 in a T.

Gentlemen, I thank you for your responses and your input. Doug, absolutely no offense taken. Being a bit of a Luddite (and somewhat proud of it) I didn't bother to try to figure out how to do a search. Probably something to do with that picture of a key up there at the top of this page. Think I'll give that a try. Thanks again.

Bryan

Like Steve said, Google search is a lot faster than using the "Keyword Search". My usage:

site:mtfca.com nylon timing gear

Steve, the problem with the nylon gears on the Chevys was not so much the gears , but the chains. As the "silent" type chains wear, they stretch. When they stretch, the teeth on the nylon gears start breaking off. I had that problem on a '72 SS454 Chevelle. I fixed that problem by using a roller type chain and gears. Funny thing was, I couldn't hear any more "noise" with that setup than with the "silent" type. Dave
