Can anyone from Indiana assist me on the correct method to deal with the B.M.V. for changing a title and registration, after swapping out your Model T engine?

They don't understand that the serial number on the engine is the V.I.H. and when you change engines, you have to correct title, registration and insurance paper work.

There are no old timers around anymore and the youngsters depend on the computer systems, which wants you to fill out multiple pages of paper work and contact State Police for inspection, as it they don't have better things to do, in order to correct everything.

Stamp your number on the top of the right frame rail and be done. No changes necessary

Steve

A quick look at your state's BMV seems like the State Form 120907 (R4/10-11) is just like what we have in FL, allows you to change the i.d. number of the engine.

The Form is located at your BMV website

http://www.in.gov/bmv/2366.htm

click on hot link "Appl. for Special ID #"

You write in the new engine ID number, state reason as 'engine changed'. Should be pretty easy. Only thing is FL is that a new title is issued and the FL DVM charged the same for a 're-issue' of title with only the motor number change on mine, costs $78 like a new title registration!

It's hard enough for the clerks to know the state law, you have to point out the law to them! Same as DC, that's why all our businesses need lobbyists, they know the law better than the politicians, you can't get anything done without pointing out the law to the bureaucrats whose job it is to use it!

Steve. Your profile says you have a 24, 25 and a 27. The 27 has the (original) engine # stamped on the top of the frame near the emergency brake cross shaft.

Nobody you're going to run into at your local vehicle office is going to know that the 24 and 25 don't have frame numbers.

I would go with the stamp the old number into your frame rail crowd on this one. It will save a lot of problems but if you do want to change the title, you will need to get the police inspection and fill out all the paper work and cross your fingers. I know it has been done but they change everything every year around here and then it depends on who you get behind the counter after all that.
Another idea might be to get a bill of sale from who ever sold you the new engine and have them put the engine number and year of car along with make and model and have them sign it and give it to the DMV. They will still want the police inspection and maybe a title search but it is another option to try.

I agree wholeheartedly with Doug Money. Stamp the number on the frame and forget all about it. Any other plan exposes you to all manner of bureaucratic nonsense.

My vote for frame as well. You'll live longer with less stress.

Steve, the best thing you can do is to make of friend of the manager at your local license issuer. Don't waste time arguing with someone sitting behind the counter. Take along photos explaining the engine change and the differing serial number. Take a photo of the number stamped into the frame if you can find it too. Most of all, park any attitude you may have at the door and walk in looking like a deer in the headlights, but demand to see the manager.

Regards,
Garnet
