setting still, motor running, when brake pedal is pushed a terrible noise comes from the transmission. I thought when setting still the drive shaft and brake drum were stopped so when brake pedal is pushed I am only tighting the brake band. can someone tell me what might be going on?

Take off the transmission cover and look inside.

Danny---That "terrible" noise is your tripple gears. Reverse always produces a terrible noise but it gets better as you use it---Paul

You are correct that the brake drum does exactly what the drive plate does when 'idle'. The brake drum HAS to with the way it is connected.

My guess is that you do not have a real free neutral (the weight of the car is keeping it in place with the plates skipping) or your reverse band is dragging some with the same plate effect.

The noise is probably the backlash flipping to the other side but thinking out loud that should be a one time 'thunk'. So if it is a chatter or a continuous growl I can only think it is like Paul mentioned, something is fighting itself and the triple gears may be banging back and forth with the clutch disk 'chatter'.

Go through a free neutral check...put the rear on jackstands, chock the front, start it up and pull the stick to 12 0'clock high. If the rear wheels stop slowly without brake drag, you have a free neutral. If not, you don't. Next step would be to loosen the bands on the low speed drum and the reverse drum just in case you have drag and try again.

Try the check you may get short term lucky. Just adjust the clevis for free neutral. I'd guess that you do have unwanted wear inside, and it may require an overhaul which is a chore...but sort it out one thing at a time and a true real neutral sounds like the best place to start.

Is it possible that the brake band is contacting the edge of the low band and scraping when it is applied?

Ive experienced something similar, but wouldn't consider my noise terrible. It has free neutral and will sit still on level ground when idling, but makes a noise when you put your foot on the brake. My guess is that the brake band raises or lowers or otherwise repositions the brake drum taking up some clearance (wear) and is just riding in a different position than normal, causing the noise. Both of ours do this to some extent, but not anything that concerns me. Yours sounds like it is worse than ours.

thanks guys for all your replys. I checked my neutral and believe it is ok. I think my brake drum has worn enough to move just enough to cause the driven gear to clash with the triple gears.
