Is there no means to secure the top or a '21 /'22 radiator shell to the radiator? Is it only held with the two mounting studs at the bottom?. I have 2 shells, and the only holes I see are the welting holes along the edge. Neither the radiator that came with the car, not an original, it was a replacement, or my new Berg's have any means for attachment. I'm to assume that is the way it is supposed to be?
There should be a pan head screw on each side about 2/3's the way up.
Doug Wilson:
Only the 26/27 radiators have a screw on the top of the side. The 21/22 are fastened on the bottom ONLY.
Correct, the low shell is held only by the lower mounting studs. Only the high shell has additional fasteners on the radiator.
Original early '23 low rad and shell.
And the radiator neck.
Or you can hang it around your neck too
Both my '24 and '27 have the flat head c/s screw and square nut for mounting shell to rad. Of course my '24 rad and shell may not be origional. BTW the catalogs show the mounting bolt set (T3947MB)for 17-27 Ts.
Ya and how many 1917 to 1923 owners have bought that set? Me! No way, ya right!
I, for one, have never seen a low steel shell with a hole for a screw to mount it to the radiator. Every one I have worked on just slid onto the radiator and was held down by the radiator mounting bolts. My '24 coupe high steel shell does have screws to mount the shell to the sides of the radiator. I had to go downstairs to look.
Drive carefully, and enjoy, W2
