Hey guys,

I received bolts from RV Anderson so that I can put new hubs on my wheels.

Any idea of the best way to paint these? I tried putting primer on, but it just seems too white right off. Should I try to sandblast the heads of the bolts first?

Thanks guys, Michael

What color are you intending to paint them? You could scuff them before priming--that wouldn't hurt anything, and then use primer that is compatible with the topcoat. Usually gray or red-brown is used under a dark color.

Most bolts and nuts have an oil coating or film on them. I etch them with acid and then netral it before painting.

I hit the wrong button the word should be neutralize not netral

Don't etch high strength bolts with acid. If you do you are flirting with hydrogen embrittlement.

I'm just trying to paint them black. They look fine with the sort of gun blue/black color that they are. However, I'm afraid of them rusting if they are unpainted.

RV...is rust an issue with these bolts if they are unpainted? To me, that would be the best solution.

Thanks,

Michael

I'd mask the bolts with duct tape and blast the heads. I think that will make a rougher and more even surface than wire brushing.

Thanks Steve...They are so smooth, I don't think there is enough tooth for primer to stick to without doing so.

If you have a drill motor, lathe, or drill press, just chuck them up, and sand the heads with 220. I punch holes in a cardboard box, and stick the bolts in the holes and paint, all at once.

Michael, they will rust eventually, but slower than, say, CR steel because of the carbon content. Larry's method is good.
