HEy Guys Im trying to get the bendix spring and assembly off right now, How do you pull it off? I cant pull the starter through the hogshead
STOP STOP STOP
remove the metal cover on the pedal side (bendix cover) Remove the screws in the 12, 6 and 9 o'clock positions. Loosen the 3 o'clock position but don't take it out. Then remove the cover.
At this point, remove the bolt and washer closest to the rear of the car. Then pull the drive collar off, making sure to catch the woodruff key which holds it on. Slide rest of bendix off, and then you are able to unscrew the starter motor, and remove it.
I did this the bendix was exposed. I thought the spring might be under tension I didnt want to just pull it without some research. No worries I got it off so I could pull the hogshead, found a cracked drive drum
OK, no once you unscrew the first bolt on the spring, there is no tension and the whole thing slides off.
Was it the reverse drum that is cracked? That's a big job to replaced the drums as it usually means pulling the engine.
It does mean pulling the engine.
One thing at a time. Don't try to do everything at the same time. Take care of the rear axle and drive shaft, then move on to the transmission and engine.
