A friend of mine at work brought in some old Ford wrenches today. One is marked "5-Z-834". It's basically an L-handled fixed socket type wrench, maybe 9/16". Is there a list of "Z" tools and their specific uses and what would this wrench have been for?
picture?
Titening or lossening bolts. I just had to say that. :-)
Jerry,
I like the way you think!
Jack,
Sorry no pic. Hoping the Z number would do it.
It's not in the list of Model T tools. It could be a Model A tool. Perhaps for a distrubator... distbatriliator... discombobulater, oh heck; one of those new-fangled things for the sparken-puten.
Like Ken, I came up blank after looking...
Other tools around it that I have numbers for were specialty wrenches and sockets of odd-ball lengths for special places...but that doesn't mean squat in searching Ford tools
Unca Jack has it...how about a picture!
Sometimes earlier 3Z tools were renumbered by Ford later in the T era. To see it might help.
does it look like this????
Jerry,
The 1919 Service Bulletin, Issue 7, Page 50, July 1,1919, had this list of Zee tools:
Murray Fahnstock says the list of Zee tools is contained in materials provided to service trainees at the (Highland Park?) plant. Does anyone have copies of these materials?
Jerry,
How long is the handle on the wrench? I found some info on 9/16" Socket L handle wrenches. It looks like they were just for 9/16" cap screws, no specific use documented. None match your number however.

That looks like my wrist pin bolt wrench.

I found the same 3Z 1XX and 6XX series. 5z series but no 8XX numbers.
And of course the 20XX and the 12XX series for the T. I've just gotten a start of studying these series but I suspect A or B vintage to the 8XX series. The system had dumped the Z designation by the early 30's.
Which leaves my no name (but very similar to Blue Points/Snap-On) 5120 5/8" 'L' socket wrench a mystery too.
The pic I posted is a flywheel cap screw wrench, which is 13.6 inches long. The wrist pin bolt wrench looks exactly like this except it's 3.1 inches shorter. The 5Z-210 replaced an earlier 3Z-601 in late 1920. The wrist pin wrench is 5Z-209 and replaced 3Z-647
I too, have not found any references to 8xx series tools in the Model T era.
Here's a scan I saved from a post by Jeff Humble showing some of the Model T Z tools.
The Model A 5Z tools I have are in the 1000 digit range.
Fordson tractor wrench?
Jim
Are Lincoln wrenches also Z series?
