So far I've used a bike speedometer, but I've come across a Stewart Warner 280-X head that appears to be in good working condition. What would be a reasonable amount to spend?
$200 to $400 if it has been serviced. The most difficult part is to get the driving parts that mount on the right wheel. You will need the correct sprocket and the correct fiber small gear. The flexible tube usually has a chain inside and one end fits in the swivel and the other end in the back of the speedometer head. You will need a drilled spindle arm so the drive unit can mount. The complete drive unit sells for about $300 The cable housing and cable will cost another $150. All of this on top of the price of the speedometer. If you do not have the drilled spindle arm you can get a clamp for another $50. So a correctly working speedometer can cost upwards of $1000.
I use a $125 GPS.
I use a free app on my I-phone, very large display. Wish it had an odometer.
I have a free app on my phone called Speedview and it has a compass, speedometer and an odometer and works very well.

Bill, that's the most sac-religious thing I've heard!! I can only imagine haveing a iPhone mounted to one of those brackets that mount to a windshield on a Model T!! Old tech... Meet new tech. I'm jokeing Bill! I do have some xtra speedometers for a Model T layin around. If your interested ill send to ya. Needs restoration, but if it's going to a good home...
Steve, I'm as cheap as you, but I managed to get a nice period correct Stewart Warner together and working nicely on my '18 van for very little. Once you know what you need, and you are not in a hurry, it will all come together if you keep looking.
Personally, I can't do the modern speedo's.
John, The beauty of this app is nothing needs to be hooked up. Just face the phone forward and you use the phone battery to get mph and distance. You can use it on a car, motorcycle or rickshaw---and its free. Thanks for the speedo offer. Bill
John you gave me a chuckle. Last summer we parked our T's in Jacksonville Oregon an 1860's town. It was a celebration with many people dressed in period garb. A fellow and his wife walked by all cowboyed up, look at my T and said....The future !!
He had a cell phone palmed in his hand...good one I thought. Great line.
I have the Stewart-Warner Speedo in my 27 coupe although it is not hooked up.
I promise myself before every outing that I am going to get the Garmin out of the Monte Carlo and use it to check my speed in the T. ANd every single time, I forget it. Must be a sign...grin..
