Harold had a neat idea for some felt valve seals for a quick fix to sloppy valve guides if you couldn't re-do your valves at present . My question is , could you use a bigger felt piece and larger washer or custom made washer and put them under the main valve spring instead of a second spring ? I haven't looked yet to see if there is room.

Where is old Seth Harbuck when you need him? Dan, the valve stem boss extends down about 3/4 of an inch below the block (not as drawn) and the Valve spring sits around the boss. As I see it the second spring is necessary for this trick.
Thanks John... wasn't sure ...
This is a modified version of the same drawing and shows the valve guide boss. As John states, the second spring is necessary to hold the washer and felt in place.
What ever over size the valve guide is, so will the felt hole be in about 15 minutes of running.
What ever kind of spring you use in the inside of the main spring, to hold a washer up, will add greatly to the over all spring pressure!
Idea won,t work!
You would have to use a modern valve seal, and a tapered cap, to go over the guide bosses and sleeve retainer.
The best way is to fix the guides!
I agree with Herm. If you're going to this much trouble, just ream the guides, grind the seats and replace the valves. Done!
