Model T Ford Forum: Forum 2012: Rajo head gasket

I almost made it back sunday from the Canam tour but blew a head gasket on the speedster. I am looking for a source on a copper gasket for a four valve Rajo. Yes I know they make a paper gasket but would prefer copper if I can get one. And for anyone who knows me I was only going 38mph when she blew.

Lang's just listed one on e-bay and there is a steel one listed there also. Give Lang's a call.

After replacing the head gasket on the Fronty every couple of years, I installed studs at least five years ago, and no more failed gaskets.

Two of the Model A studs are just the right length for the Fronty, so I bought 16 of those. I run the studs into the block to where they are snug, and then do all the torquing on the nuts up top. That takes advantage of the full depth of the threaded holes in the block, and does not put any twisting, grinding strain on the block's threads.

Since the nuts are SAE, they provide about 20% more clamping for the same torque.

I spoke to mike about this last night. What do you guys think ? Get rid of the gasket all together and machine for O-rings . What are your thoughts ?

Rick, If you are talking fine threads and I think you are the pull on the block threads is more than with course threads. The ramp angle has more up lift so your torque is about 65 lbs. there is a chart to show you the difference.

Mike, Thanks but a 8 valve gasket will not work on a 4 valve

Ralph, Definitely thinking of this Thanks

Jerry, I may not understand what your saying. How would this work?

They have both the 8 valve (solid) and 4 valve ("lopsided") gaskets on their website catalog...

Thanks Susanne, was trying to stay away the paper gasket but this may be my only option as I am not finding copper yet. I understand the demand for this gasket can't be great. Happy someone making one at all.

Thanks, Ed... need to have a couple solids made for the BB head (along with the heat crossover for the manifolds) I want to use in a future project... would have been on the '20 before it got lost in the shuffle... Anyway, again, thanks!!!

The ones I've bought are steel clad. I think copper is over-rated.

Mike C,
I have been using the same Yahoo email for about fifteen years now. Mostly been okay. And old friends can still find me from old rosters.
Drive carefully, and enjoy, W2
