I was expecting a package from John Danuser today. UPS came to my house at 12:41 My wife was in the BASEMENT. She heard the dog barking and came up to see what the hell was going on. She saw the driver getting in the truck and hauling ass away. No package, no notice, no nothing. I arrived 10 minutes later, and it's like he was never here.
Now the package isn't even at the UPS distribution center. It's still on the guy's truck in another location where he's helping another driver with his packages.
So I can't even go get the package at all. AND of course UPS is the hardest people to get a hold of. They don't want to talk to you. They just want the money for delivering your stuff.
So, I make this plea to anyone that I do business with now or in the future: if you send me anything, send it by UNITED STATES MAIL. I don't care how much it costs, I'll pay it.
And John, if you read this, and by some chance they send it back to you, please re-send it.
William, it should get to you, but if it comes in return I'll ship it back to you. They ship to me and just leave it, no questions asked, just ring the door bell and leave.
So the driver tells the distribution center that the dog scared him.
The dog was on a 30 foot tether in the BACK YARD. The driver would have had to walk past an automobile, past my front door, and down the driveway to even get to the dog. The dog likes to show he's "Cock of the Walk" when he on the leash, but he's a Puggle, and is terrified of squirrels and cats. If the driver had spoke to him, he'd been his friend for life. THE DOG IS HARMLESS.....

Often USPS is less expensive than UPS.
My regular UPS guy leaves dog cookies for my two dogs when he leaves a package on the front porch. I think that must be a sign that he comes to my house too often. lol
Now, that being said, I was supposed to have a package delivered today - the UPS website has it marked as delivered, but nothing arrived. I already have the shipper putting a trace on it...I have a feeling I am going to have to re-order some stuff. This is the first time I have ever had a problem with them.
I heard that Fed Ex and UPS are going to merge. They plan to call it FED-UP.
If you have a problem with UPS call the Atlanta home office.404-828-4300. The local hub does not want a call from them. Things get better in a hurry. Scott
I think it all kind of depends on who you get. Up through June 2009, I was handling all Dutch passport and visa applications for my corner of the Midwest. I sent the applications to Chicago by UPS 2nd Day Air, they sent the passports back to me the same way, then I sent them to the clients the same way. Rarely had a problem. I did manage to bypass the UPS 800-number and got the number of the local distribution center. They were unfailingly helpful. Because they were passports, everything had to be signed for on delivery. If I went to the grocery store and came home to an attempt-to-deliver notice, I would call the distribution center and ask where the driver was. They would set up a rendezvous point and I'd meet him and get my envelope.
The biggest problem I had once was with FedEx. Someone sent me something and used FedEx. My house is the only house on the even-numbered side of the 500-block of North Woodlawn, and the house number is over the front porch and also down at the street level on a sign. The envelope wasn't delivered because the FedEx driver "couldn't find the house." I arranged with FedEx that the driver would bring the envelope back out the next day with an instruction to call me for directions. It didn't show up and I saw the driver at a local shopping center. I asked him about it and he said, "I didn't bring it today because I couldn't find the house yesterday." I ended up driving up the the FedEx distribution center, where I at least got a very profound apology from the manager.
William, if my wife's rooster gets out the water guy won't come on the property and he is a big chicken (the rooster... maybe the water guy), no pun intended. And my little beagle has chased off her fair share of new drivers (once they get to know her the problem becomes keeping her out of thier truck!). But I've learned to cut them some slack after working for FedEx for a couple of years. Not wanting to offend, but just to give a different perspective... I was bitten enough to sympathize with your driver. Still love dogs, get along with most, and understand that they are just protecting thier territory, but... Some dogs just come out of nowhere. If the package didnt need a signature, I've left a few on the lawn for fluffy to work his aggression out on (never got any complaints). Every time I was bit, it was a shock to the homeowner. "He's never done that before!" or " you must have shown fear, they can sense that ya'know". Once I was bit just after giving the beast a treat I carried as a bribe for just such encounters. The quite ones are the most dangerous. The little mutts are the worse offenders, but they are easier to shake off your leg
My problem with UPS is this: I have had them leave packages on the hood of my car, so there is no excuse for him not walking up to the door and dropping a package....dog or no dog. Just sayin'
I have the cell phone number of my UPS driver. He has even called me to give me a heads up on Model T stuff he has seen. He is a car guy, maybe that helps. If I have a package to ship, after he has left my place, I just call him and set up a place to meet. Fed Up is a different story.
My UPS guy takes packages around to the back of the office and puts them in my truck if they are heavy. If the office is locked he takes them next door or delivers them to my house. He knows what is business VS Model T. He always has dog treats for the dog. He is just a super guy who goes out of his way to be of service. I use UPS whenever I can because of that.
You guys are lucky the UPS drivers in my area just throw the box on the front porch and leave no bell no nothing that is if they don't loose it.
Will,
Could be worse...my local guy leaves it everywhere, doesn't even knock...
I ordered a custom pre-finished wood screen door from the other coast a few weeks ago, had it shipped UPS...I only found it had arrived when I used the garage door opener from the inside and it fell on the car when the door opened
I was so excited it got here when it did, I fixed the dings and scratches and hung it right away.
Must be that Jersey UPS guys just have a way about them
UPS is great 99% of the time until they break down and fail. They will not take responsibility for any f&%k up and will not give out any information. They will not answer any questions and will tell you to call the shipper who has no way to know what UPS did wrong. Flat rate boxes from the USPS are a great deal and I have never had to pick up the phone to find out what went wrong. Not so much with UPS. The drivers work hard but the management of the company is suspect. I ordered some gas and spark rods from Lang's and UPS delivered a damaged empty tube to my house with a sticker on it that said something might be wrong. When I called UPS they said that I had to call Lang's to find out what what went wrong. Poor Ashley had to stop what she was doing and call UPS. Absolute BS.
Oh man,the Ups guy made me and my dad mad 1 day.My dad's 95 Roadmaster Buick is immaculant. The ding bat leaves a package on the Hood of a dark blue car.I saw him do it and jumped him politely but firmly and so far we aint had that trouble again.
Someone sold me a honey comb radiator and sent it by DHL.It was tore all to peices when it got here and since the sender didnt buy insurance,I was screwed.
Someone here on the forum sent me some chassis parts by Fedex. The box was busted up and 1 was missing. They wouldnt even check around see where it was.Hung up on me the last 2 times I called.
Aint none of them worth a hoot.
I sent some Briggs and Stratton generator parts to Washington state.Sent some flat rate box, others parcel post. They all got there the same day.
William
I am with the UPS (mailman and other delivery) persons.
Not withstanding your claims, how do they know your so called harmless dog is "harmless"?
I have been bitten by two "harmless" dogs in my neighborhood on my daily walk and a lost one inch chunk of shin flesh. But, according to the owners they were "harmless"
Dogs are territorial pack animals. Persons approaching (or walking by) your residence are not part of your pack and encroaching on their territory.
Flight is right, your Model T parts are of no consequence to the UPS man.
On the other hand my UPS driver and I are on a first name basis and he/I knows what to do.
I love US Postal service flat rate envelopes with signature for rebuilt coils and UPS for rebuilt starters and generators in custom made boxes with signature.
Ron the Coilman
My UPS lady is awesome and she loves old cars even my Model T.Always know when she leaves a package as there is always two cookies for her friends, my dogs.
The issues between delivery men and dogs is a century old or more. There really isn't an answer for it. On a daily basis I've got 2 eighty pound dogs that stay in the house with me. There's a fence around the back yard and they're never out of my sight. But I'd never guarantee one of them wouldn't tear you up if they had a mind too. Dogs protect what's theirs. The problem being they don't let you know what's theirs before they rip into you. All that being said, it's still lousy business to treat your customers with disrespect and not provide good customer service. From the sound of your complaints, other than the US Postal Service there aren't too many good delivery services left. And the sad part is, 10 years ago UPS led the pack in customer service. it must be what you'd call a sign of the times. Everybody's so focused on the $ and not on customer service.
I do like USPS BUT if you ship a box of expensive items and insure them and ONE item gets damaged you MUST SURRENDER all the items to collect on the insurance. The Post Office will NOT do a partial payment. Its all or nothing.
On the other hand United Parcel Service will pay you for only the damaged item and let you keep the undamaged part of the shipment. Keep that in mind when you ship rare parts.
Bill
Keep the dog in when you are expecting something.
The only person who knows your dog is you.......maybe.......
I have had the non delivery problem with all three shippers. Some shippers have sent me things, specifying that a signature be obtained to leave a package. If I had a delivery address in a high crime area, that would be wise, but I don't think it is needed in my case. I am seldom at the address (a rented office warehouse) that I use for deliveries. After about two years, USPS, UPS, and FedEx are finally going around and Unless it is raining and they fear my package will be ruined, or it specifies a signature, they will now leave the parcel, regardless of its size.
This is almost as much fun as waterpumps and disturbutors.
I bought a $4 item on tbay recently, and the idiot seller mailed it with signature required. I had to go to PO and show ID to pick it up.
True UPS story, ca. 1982:
UPS comes to dad's home in TN..."where's Dick?"...mom says "at our antique store".
UPS goes to store: "where's Dick?"...cashier says "at the Donut shop".
UPS goes to donut shop: "where's Dick?"...waitress say's "end of the counter".
UPS delivers box. Dad thanks him. UPS guy still standing around and says "well, what did Snyder's send you?"
So dad opened the box and showed the UPS guy what he bought. UPS guy says "neat", and heads off to next delivery.
That's what small-town America used to be.
If they are capable of leaving my stuff on MY CAR, because they are too lazy to walk to the door, there's no excuse for not having left the package....period.
I think it all depends on your area. Our UPS guy rings the bell and if we are not home he leaves it on the porch. He also carries milk bones to bribe the dog so he is thrilled to see him.
mike
Well, I eagerly await the truck.
OK UPS arrived. My normal driver, who DOES know my dog. He explained that a fill-in driver was on his route yesterday. And that he couldn't understand why the guy wrote on the box that there was a dog in the yard, but couldn't leave the box.
So how come the UPS distribution center couldn't tell me this??????
My normal driver is a cool guy....
I think I found out what is wrong with UPS in my area. Everyone that likes UPS on this forum talks about how nice there UPS delivery person is and they know there name. Here in my town there are two men on a truck and about 4 trucks servicing my area ( the town I live in is less than one mile square ) so we don't get to know there names or even see who delivers.
Being a nice wife I knew a part that my husband wanted so I got a catalog from under the coffee table, brought it to work, called and ordered part. I told the nice lady that this was ordering this as a gift for my husband - so the Sold To info could stay in his name (why set up a new account) but that the ship to address was going to be to my neighbors house. We completed the order and hung up. An hour later David calls me, he is mad, parts place just called, WHY WOULD THE NEIGHBOR BE ORDERING MODEL T PARTS ON HIS ACCOUNT? Evidently they had his old credit card number. . . so the nice lady called back to get the updated information. He knew he hadn't placed an order so she told him what it was for - and where it was delivering to! He told me that he had cancelled the order. I told him he was a dummy. . . to call her back, update the info and get it delivered that it was his gift. We both had a chuckle and it was done. Three days later the box addressed to my neighbor showed up on our front porch. The UPS guy was so used to delivering this particular vendor parts to our house. . . he didn't even read the label. My lesson was learned - I know have my own accounts and have the items shipped to my work.
The UPS guy knows to leave any packages on our porch. . . last week we had a new radiator delivered. Imagine my horror when I pull up in the driveway and see the box - BRASSWORKS all over it - I'm surprised that it was still on my porch!
WOW! This thread sure peaked my interest. I am
sooooo glad that William's story had a happy ending and was going to suggest that he try to get to know his UPS guy and erase the fears he has about the dogs, tell him where he can leave the packages out of the weather and public view etc... Turns out he knows his regular guy and it's all good. I like to fell outta my chair reading about the ones that would leave packages on vehicle hoods. I especially likes the Scott Conger post and can relate to it. I retired in 03
after 38 yrs as a UPS guy and his post best describes the relationship I had with most of the people on my route. In spite of that I've been bitten by friendly dogs half a dozen times in 38 yrs. The one I remember most happened after I gave the dog a treat, made the delivery and he bit me on the butt at I walked back to the truck. (go figure). Man I wish there was some way to go back and edit the title of this thread. Dick
I need to put a sign out for our UPS guy. We live in a two-story house on a hillside. The main part of the house is upstairs over the garage and lesser portions of the house. The "front door" to our house is upstairs. Heavy car parts do not need to be left by the front door. Downstairs would be fine. That transmission weighed almost eighty pounds! I carried the thing back down myself. I didn't know whether to thank the guy, yell at the guy, or send flowers. Fortunately I caught the guy delivering the engine block.
Drive carefully, and enjoy, W2
Things arrive here from the USofA and the UK quite often. I would say that over the years I have had between 100 and 200 deliveries from overseas, and all but one have arrived safely. The one that didn't was from Scotland via Royal Mail and never did arrive.
I have only once had something damaged in transit and it too was mailed from the UK. (Water damaged)
Although they have increased their fees, the US Postal Service is great and I would prefer to use them over Fed Ex and UPS who are also pretty terrific, very fast (5 days from NY to regional NSW) but cost a bucket-load, which is my ONLY complaint.
Cheers,
Rob
Real postage is way better than email, faster and more reliable too! Mostly more reliable not always faster but quite a bit faster in most cases. Bigger envelopes with real mail too.
Everyone should go to using real mail with postmen and make this email thing redundant.
I haven't seen my regular UPS driver in over 2 months.
Why? Because he made a delivery to a house down the road and was attacked by two 50 pound dogs.
Each grabbed a hand and started violently shaking and tugging. One dog peeled the skin and nail from his thumb like you would peel a prophylactic.
I imagine, once his recovery is completed, this driver will attempt to avoid dogs like William's driver does.
OTOH, a Riverside, Calif, cop wanted to get in a backyard as backup for a raid two doors away. He shot the family pet pit bull in the backyard, who the owners claim was friendly to everyone. Shoot first...
Molly once peed on the foot of a FedEx driver. Does that count as a vicious attack ?
schuh
Molly is definitely a killer. What a great photo. I think I'd lose my mind if a cop came in my backyard and shot my dog so he could get to the back of a house 2 houses away. I can understand why he did it but...
Ricks, did the dog that got shot belong to the suspect or a innocent neighbor? That sob would be getting his pants sued off if it were my dog.Had no bussiness in the back yard if it werent the suspects.
It was the backyard of an innocent neighbor two houses away. He is suing Riv PD for $75K. They showed pix of the dog, who looked no more vicious than this one:
When the UPS driver came by yesterday, explaining the problem from the previous day, my Puggle "Chopper", went right up to him and nuzzled his legs. Didn't even woof once.
So maybe the other guy just smelled of fear. Who knows.
Suing seems like a terriable thing sometimes. But sadly,it is the only legal way to hold wrong doer's responsable for their actions nowadays. The cop should bare minimum have to bury the dog with a shovel and pay for a replacement.
We had a Pit when I was growing up.Never a problem.
My neighbor has them, they are scared of me for no reason. But when I do approach and pet them once, ooops,I cant get them to go away they roll over and want their bellys rubbed
I grew up with a pit six weeks younger than me.
I'm glad William's story had a happy ending.
At least "Chopper" did not pee on the UPS guys foot like that vicious Molly.
ooh! WAIT that was the FEDEX guy. NEVER MIND
Dick (retired UPS guy)
A few years ago I had to always go to the UPS place to get my packages because they couldn't find my house number. They always said there was
"no such number".
Then one day a driver called to ask what apartment I was in!?
They were trying to deliver the packages to and apartment building on Orchard Ave. in San Leandro. I live on Orchard Ave. in Hayward.
The truck packers were putting my boxes in the San Leandro truck instead of the Hayward truck and nobody was looking at the City or zip code. I guess they all though they knew where Orchard Av. was and never looked further.
When I ship things out I go to FEDEX so I don't have to listen to people complain and bitch at UPS.
Hey! The FEDEX guys gotta eat too. We can't win em all. Nothin worse than listenin to people bitch at UPS.
I had a lot of stops in very rural areas. Down what can be best described as logging roads. Past the "no trespassing, survivors will be shot" and "you are now in range" signs. I met some of the best folks back there. One stop they were always glad To see me, except when the door opened the dogs would literally pour out of the place. Most would lick you to death, except that one little bast$&d.....! Musta had a good sense of smell.
Let me get this straight, the cop shot a dog of an innocent family because he was using their backyard as an entry point to another property? I just want to make sure I have that correct
Rob, he wasn't even using their backyard as entry to another property. He was just backup or watching an arrest, two houses away.
SoCalif has some aggressive cops among the good ones. Some are on trial for homicide.
Where's Frank's pet when we need him (her)? (the pet).
Or did Frank have the pet pig?
I thought I saw this guy in your neighborhood ....
Alrighty then ....
Jim
My UPS driver Gerry, would see my truck parked in town and leave my packages on my front seat, say hi to my dogs (first name basis) and give them both cookies. No problem here with UPS.
^ That's one of the nice things about living in a small town........
My UPS driver called me up on his phone because the dog was outside his truck barking. He told me that he has given the dog 10 dog bones and he still won't let me out of his truck...So I had to go out and retrieve the package from him... by the way the dog is only 10 months old weighs 8lbs..I laughed!
