Model T Ford Forum: Forum 2012: No power after hill climb in low pedal??

Yesterday while on our club Fall Colour Tour I found that after having to use Low pedal on some hills I could not get any power after I reach the hill top. I'd jack rabbit along, need to slow to basically a stop and start thru low pedal, and then up to high. Had great speed in high, good pull in low, but what is that jack rabbitting?? On previous tours I was able to do hills with relative ease, but this one was not in the cards. I tightend two spark plug caps a lunch, and hoped that might be some of it, but wasn't to be. Thoughts??

Restricted fuel flow?

Did it seem like the engine was lugging?

Lugging, yes, it wasn't as if it was running away and the band was slipping. . ya . . lugging would be a good description.

Restricted fuel? I had removed and re attached my carb recently, maybe should have used a new gasket. Also used White plumbing tape at connection . . maybe got some over opening to carb . .??

I have good throttle when starting up, and on flat when gearing up, but after a climb when applying high pedal it jack rabbits like crazy. Reminded me of when I learned to drive on a standard in 1959.

Sounds like vapor lock. The routing of the gas line is probably like most and too close to the exhaust pipe. Also, if you are going up hill and you have less than a full tank, the gas pressure is not enough to push the gas through to the carb. I had this happen on tour but always in the afternoon. Why, because the tank was half full and did not have the force to push the gas through. I would fill up and everything ran well. Lesson learned. I also moved the gas line away from the exhaust pipe. Hope this helps!!

Ross, I doubt that this has anything to do with your problem, but you mentioned using white plumbing tape. If you are referring to white Teflon tape, it is not designed to be used with gasoline. You need to use the yellow type. Just a heads up. Dave

And...check or clean the sediment bulb screen if you haven't already repaired it. The gravity fuel system operates on about 1 psi. Any restriction of debris at the sediment screen will affect hill climb.

Had that in my '24 touring, ran fine on the flat, would get almost to top of crest of a hill and starve out. Tank full. Found that 1/4 of the screen was blocked with stuff, after cleaning, ran the hills fine again.
