I have found that the brake cam has worn into the backing plate over time. Would it be ok to put a washer shim between the backing plate and the cam or would it push the brake shoes out too much where they may possibly rub on the drum nuts? It would also put a slight camber on the shoes, (the thickness of the washer). Thanks, John

I use a 1/2 inch machine washer. Works good so far.

Mine was the same. I ground off the shaft of the old one (couldn't budge the pesky drift pins that were in it ... and put in a new one like Jack... with a washer behind it. I slightly rounded the backing plate side of the cam, so could still pivot freely. It was cheaper than a new backing plate! Still, the cam did not stick out more than the brake shoes. I think you should be OK.

If the whole going through the backing plate is egged out or excessively large, that might be another matter. Surprisingly, mine still fit pretty well when I got done.

Best of luck!
Dennis
