Hi

We have run into rear end troubles on our 26T Touring last week. I have taken the differential apart and have found several problems. One question that I have is in relation to the universal joint. The body rivets are loose. Can I removed these rivets and replace them with new ones? There is quite a bit of clearance on the joint itself; however I think if I tighten up the rivets in the body, the joint will tighten up. If I remove the rivets, should I repack the joint with grease when I reassemble it? My son and I are new to the T repairs, so any help is appreciated. My Dad always did the repairs before.

We will also be in the market for an 11 tooth pinion gear. Any suggestions on where to pick one up? I don't see any on eBay.

Thanks

Bill

Get a better U-joint,pack the housing after you install it. You should be able to find an 11 tooth gear from some one near to where ever you are?

Keep watching ebay. They show up from time to time. If possible find a set (ring and pinion). Remember the parts you're buying off ebay stand a chance of being up to 100 years old. They could be in pretty bad shape. And there are some real junk peddlers on ebay. A new set from Langs, Snyders, Macs, or Bobs will run about $300.00 +/-. Make sure you purchase an Axle book from the MTFCA and one of the service manuals as well. They're some excellent resources for help.

William, your u-joint could possibly be repaired, but it's hard to tell without looking at it. They show up on ebay pretty often, just make sure the seller shows good closeup pictures of it before you bid on it. I bought three very good u-joints a couple of years ago for the buy it now price of $29.99, one is nearly N.O.S. Dave
