On Sunday my wife and I decided to take the T to Durham NH (home of UNH) about 9 miles one way to get coffee. It was a beautiful day and the T started easily.
I usually drive with the timing retarded slightly (about 8 o’clock) because I read that too much advance can contribute to overheating. Since it was a cool day I moved the lever all the way down at full speed and it seemed to run better. I still held up traffic a bit but the only bounce was due to 55 PSI tires and bumps in the road. We got lots of waves and honks. When stopped in Newmarket NH to check the rear light a kid ran across the street and asked us a bunch of questions.
We got to Durham and found a parking spot on the street near the coffee shop. It was fun sitting outside, drinking coffee, and watching the college kids walk by the car. Some tried to ignore it, some looked and smiled, some stopped to inspect it, and one guy had his girlfriend stand next to the car as he took her picture. No one touched it!
So what did I learn??
Drinking coffee with my wife on a Sunday afternoon in Durham NH and getting there in a Model T makes for a good family outing.
When we got home my wife mentioned that we had not been to Petey’s in Rye Beach for fried clams in awhile. She then announced that she found a back road route that would take us there and it was only 15 miles long.
Fred-
I thought you were going to say that you learned that retarded timing actually causes an over heating problem, and advancing the timing cured it.
Just so folks don't get confused. A common cause of over heating is running with not enough advance. Running with not enough advance on the spark or too far retarded will cause over heating.
Here is another thread discussing over heating:

Hey Fred,
Notice how men ruin romantic moments? It's such a shame too because you can't really have one without at least one of them. Ugh!
I appreciate you sharing, and I really love hearing that your wife enjoys it too!
But Trish, romance is all about timing and an occasional overheating.
Fred
Here is a picture from a few years ago of my 23 Fordor at the Durham, NH Dunkin Donuts. My good friend Bill and I were testing and celebrating a complete rear axle rebuild over a coffee. Bill lives in Durham and I trailered the car from PA. The mailman really liked the T.
Last year I had my 24 Touring (minus a license plate) at a coffee shop next to the police station in Dover, NH. (Lots of compliments and no tickets.) I love visiting NH.
Hello Trish: I like Eric's statement, timing and overheating, deep breathing will help also!
Trish how is "Dauber" doing?
Dick.....I love the photo of your Fordor.......the dull black finish would pair up very nicely with my '27 Tudor.......
Thanks Craig......BTW your profile photo makes me drool ......Dick
too funny Erich....
Fred, great story. They are nice to hear!
Save your drool Dick......you've heard of 20' cars?
Except for the Touring the others are 60' cars.......but fun at any distance.......
