Rotate the engine and maybe a magnet will pick it up and bring it to the top

Stick a rag in between the magnets on the flywheel and slowly crank the engine. that rag will drag what ever is in the pan. I tried it and it works.

With a small flashlight, look very closely inside, backside and all around every single magnet on the flywheel. It is amazing where those pieces can get into around the magnets.
Good luck!
Drive carefully, and enjoy, W2

I used magnetic tape. Some paint strippers use it for a guide. I found some inside the weather strip found on some home steel doors. You feed it through under the trans and saw it back and forth under the bands. It works. I found washers, nuts, and cotter pins in an engine for a friend.

There is a "trough" in the bottom of the crankcase under the transmission area where small parts can hide. Much easier than pulling the engine would be to pull the rear end, then you can remove the ball cap ("4th main") and see directly into that trough.

I recently helped a friend remove a center punch from his tranny. We tried everything we could think of before pulling the engine and putting it on a stand so we could rotate it. Once the engine was out, we removed the ball cap and there was the punch! I wish I had thought of the above suggestion before we had pulled the engine. :-)

I noticed some inexpensive remote viewing probes at Lowes, or Home Depot, the other day. They are getting cheaper. There is a tiny camera on the end of the probe and a screen at the top to view what the camera sees.
