George, 1" is ok if it works for you. But with bent pedals over the years, worn pedal ramps, non standard floorboards etc, things can vary widely. My rule of thumb is to adjust them so the brake just works efficiently. With new bands, you may have to do this a few times until they settle in. The idea is to leave as much clearance between the bands and the drum for maximum oiling and cooling of the bands, as long as you have a good working pedal.

Hope this helps.

Allan from down under.

Alan, thanks. I know the bands have never been adjusted since the rebuild 6/7 yrs ago. I found that the brakes w/RM's were really lacking. I'm driving around more here in L.A. Once I get the happy medium, I'll start working on the Rockies.

I find the biggest variable is the pedal ramps. When they are worn the pedal travel is much greater and in extreme cases you just can't get them adjusted correctly before they bottom out on the floorboards.

#2 The headlamp spring in the inside rim of the bucket has the 'fingers' out. Those provide the contact tension to the reflector, which then pushes on the lens rim.

The lamp socket is mounted with the long end towards the rear, yes, add a spring to the adj screw.

Thanks Dan, found my dad had a little off, one way or another. Going to an old car get together locally. Cleaned the sockets real well, squeezed the outer sockets in for some snugness, found some springs at the local hardware store. Replaced the bulbs. Works real well and bright now. I'll adjust the beams in the next couple of days.
Geo n L.A.
