Model T Ford Forum: Forum 2012: Generating Younger Generation Interest

A recent thread alluded to keeping the hobby alive with the younger generation. I offer the following pictures (unstaged) of my grandsons (aged 6 and 4) working with my son on a maintenance project. All he has to do is start the nut, and tell them to tighten them up (which saves him some time) and they willingly go to it! Of course he does the final tightening and checking, but what better way to get the smaller and younger generation involved. That's the third generation in our family to be involved with the Model-T.

Will and Family - Yes, that's the way to go! You can bet that those two youngsters will become avid Model T'ers.

We're looking forward to seeing you at Hershey.

Best wishes, Keith

My kids make every project take 2-3 times as long, but it sure is fun having their "help"

Derek, don't forget to teach the boys how much better Model T Fords are than those Chevelles. We don't want them going over to the dark side.:-)

Back in January of 2005, at another site, I started a thread "Is the hobby's future HERE?".

The results are pretty encouraging....... :-)

My 5 year old grandson is a 'gearhead in training'. When his father and I are working on any of the cars, he's right in the middle of everything saying "what can I do daddy, what can I do". :-)

Those little hands can handily get into some tight quarters, too!

A little OT, but one of my now, son-in-laws, was impressed with one of my daughters that said she changed her own car oil.... so he said ... "well, really? .. so what do you do to an oil filter before you put it on?" .. She promptly replied "put a finger tip of oil around the rubber seal!" ....
They were engaged within a month! LOL

Well here goes! I will be 79 in Jan 13, and my late Aunt said the first time she saw me I was helping my Dad on a car project (33Tudor Ford) and I was greasy up to my elbows. Went on to be a shade tree guy in Missouri and later heavy equipment for the Army in Germany, then to almost 56 years in the Office Equipment and now two Model T's. One is a 19 touring and the other is a '17 Depot Hack (see Profile)

Would not want to do any other thing in life.

Putting a Ruckstell in my wife's 20 yesterday. My grandson had to be out there helping. He spent more time putting the wrench and socket on the the wheel nut on and off, on and off. He spent more concentrated time out there on that T then he has spent on any of his normal toys. Thought he was doing pretty good for a 14 month old. Of course we had to go for a ride when we were done.

A friend of mine used to work on his 1956 London taxi, and his young daughter (3? 4?) helped him. If he was lying under the car, he would call out the name of a tool and she would hand it to him. She got very good at it and it made things easier for him. One day, he raised his head suddenly and banged it kind of painfully on something. His response was loud and immediate, and then he heard her puzzled voice asking, "What's a s*n of a b*tch, Daddy?"

You bring up a good point Dick. I'm afraid my grandson is learning quite a few 'mechanic's terms' that are going to get him in trouble at school. I've got to learn to watch my mouth around him.

I'm not sure I'm qualified to "teach" that lesson.

When they start driving, I won't be handing over the keys to the Chevelle as early as I might with the Model T though. If they're anything like I was, they'll be safer in a 20hp Model T with no brakes than in a 600hp musclecar with no fear. ;)

Mr. Revaz, I noticed you have a warford in your T. I purchased an aluminum warford and chickashay but sadly it was disassembled. do you have a schematic of how everything goes back together?

Cute young mechanic pictures, all of them.
I have the opposite problem. I started the same way with my sons when they were little and continued with their own cars as time progressed.
The problem now is the cars seem to be more important than the ladies. Result---NO GRAND CHILDREN, but a lot of nice Model T's.

Interesting thread. Last fall my granddaughters 11 and 6 years old came to visit. I needed to run to the local convenience store and asked the 6 yr old if she wanted to ride along. She said sure and we went out to the '26 Sedan, which by the way is old and noisy and ratty inside. After she got in and I started the car I got in and she had the wildest look in her eyes. When I asked her; "what's wrong" she replied, "Grandpa, could we ride in the real car"? When we got back she said, "Grandpa can we ride over to Uncle Mikes?" Uncle Mike of course is my son and she's been in love with my Model T's ever since. She tells her older sister that when she grows up she's going to drive Grandpa's Old smoky car.

Nathan, the picture is of a car my son was working on. Indeed, it is a Lane Warford. I don't know how how much of yours is apart, but installation requires shortening of the driveshaft and radius rods and then just hang it inline. Any further disassembly will most likely be inside the gearbox and is probably the result of some trouble. In my experience, I have not heard of any failures of the Lane (Warford) gearbox.

Thanks to all for sharing their inspiration to the younger generation. Keep it up!

Keith; Wlll see you soon in Hershey. Be sure to bring Carol!

Please, Please, Please..be careful with children around an elevated automobile. Cars can and do fall off of jack stands no matter how sturdy you think they are. It's great to teach but teach safety too.

Yes, mine were taken in a barn. My shop was tied up so I couldn't do it there. Believe me Dennis, Grandma is right there for every movement the kid makes! He comes out of the barn a lot dirtier than when he comes in. My wife has to clean his clothes before his mom sees him. LOL.

Willie, I don't think it's the cars... might be their fashion sense??? hahaha :-)

I had a lot of fun hanging out with them at the Rochester tour. Hope they're doing well.

Yes, still car related.

There was maybe a couple dozen young people who witnessed a time of 9 min 42 sec at the Children's Museum listed below.

Students from McPherson College in Kansas spent 10 minutes on Friday rebuilding a 1926 ‘Model T’ Touring car during the opening reception of the Santa Fe Concorso at the Santa Fe Municipal Airport. The students will hold the demonstration again at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Santa Fe Children’s Museum. Jane Phillips/The New Mexican -

Grandchildren are great...you can send them home eventually. What do you do with the neighborhood kids that show up every time they hear my garage door open? More showed up after this picture and of course we all had to go for a ride!

Looks like a pretty fun bunch Lance. From the looks of your yard, you must have some kind of a Model T to haul all those kids around in. :-)

Yesterday a Mom with three early to mid teens kids stopped over and #1 son couldn't WAIT to see the cars.
Then he politely asked if he could ride in one sometime......to which I replied "How about NOW?"
So the three of them piled into the '19 touring car as it was a GLORIOUS day.
We left the house and about 2 blocks away one of their young friends was in his yard so I stopped and asked if he wanted to come along.......yeah.......stupid question........ :-)
So off we went for about 5 miles.
They were all tickled to pieces and I was too because they're all old enough to never forget their first ride in an OLD car....... :-)
