We all know Ford built over 15 million T models between 1908-1927. I was a surprise to me to hear on the radio this morning that Americans purchased 15 million cars just last month. If true, it sure puts perspective on how vast the market has become since the days of Lizzy.
Keep in mind how many people now live on planet earth.
At 15 million cars in a month times 12 months makes 180 million cars in a year. There are about 311 million people in the US. I doubt that over half of all Americans, men women and children, are driving new cars!
And 47% are_________.
I can believe 15 million cars purchased per year but not per month. Does that figure include new and used cars?
I would think that would be world wide
Must have been a NPR station.
Here's the real numbers posted yesterday (Oct 2):
quote:Total U.S. sales rose 13 percent from a year earlier to nearly 1.2 million. Analysts think sales could hit 14.3 million this year, up from 12.8 million last year.
Ken, that must be it (yes it was NPR). I just couldn't believe I heard that figure for one month.
total for the year so far (as of last month) sounds mush more plausible.
Still, huge number compared to the days of Tin Lizzy.
Here's a chart of U.S. new & used vehicle sales up to 2010. Looks like total in 2010 was 51,424.000 (both new, used and leased). That's 51,434 "in thousands".

In decent times, sales of about 15 million per year is "normal"
