I am looking for feedback on the dull or shiny finish on the new injection Model T Ford steering wheel rim, a lot of people say these were dull finish when Ford produced them, but we need to know if the customer would rather have a glossy black finish, this is the rim for 1920-25 Model T Ford steering wheel and cost will be a lot cheaper than the wood rims being made now

Please let us know your input, Bob

If you did them glossy black you could include instructions for those that wanted less gloss to wet sand them with 600 until they looked satin. Looks nice as is but would also look nice in gloss.

Good job.

I like the semi-gloss.

Bob

Fantastic that you are re-making steering rims! Wow!

The semi-gloss is just like factory, what you show in the post is just what I want! :-)

I have redone 2 original wheels for my T's. After its all said and done probably semi-gloss would be the way to go if you want originality.
The glossy finsh I put on one of them was with 1000 plus wet sandpaper but that could change using 600 wet paper.
Being a practical guy Ford probably was satisfied with semi-gloss.
After all you have your hands on the wheel all the time and I cant see farmers and everyday folks back in T times worying to much about the shine on their steering wheel.
I would include some instructions on wet sanding and polishing with the new wheel to satisfy those who want a slick shiny finish.
My opinion.

Or they could paint it shiny black, if that's what they want.

My vote - semi-gloss like the finish in your pics

Semi-Gloss.

Will they get sticky when wet and blacken your hands like the originals?

No this material is what is used in the new cars on the instrument panels and other items, does not come off on your hands, Bob

Are you planning a wheel for the '26-'27 crowd?

Not for a while, I am not making this item, a friend is and the dies alone were close to 18k so if they sell good then yes, the price will be cheaper than the wood ones on the market now, Bob

I just talked to the person having these made, the retail will be $49.95 on this rim, he is also finding out on the 17" rim, I will be selling these for him and dealers are welcome to get in touch with me, they should be available in about two weeks, Bob
They will take paint just fine we just found out from the plant

Aside from the benefit of clean hands and clothes, which would be nice, is there a shortage of original steering wheel rims?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Mike Garrison on Thursday, October 04, 2012 - 05:55 pm:

Jerry, don't you figure someone doing a restoration on a T would like an opportunity to purchase a nice wheel? I know along with everything else we restored the wheel on our '38 truck and it cost us more than $50.00. And we put paint on that and I kind of wish we'd of had whatever coating these T wheels are going to have on them.

Jerry -- They are around, but it's very difficult to find one that's not cracked or otherwise damaged. Having a good solid one available which is like the originals will be a good thing for the Model T community.

Thanks, Bob, for making them available.

I have more steering wheels than I'll ever use, but if I were buying a new one I'd want the original-type (Fordite-looking) satin finish.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By ROBERT BERGSTADT on Friday, October 05, 2012 - 08:22 am:

Satin finish is what gets my vote also, these are in production right now and for the person wanting gloss it can be painted very easy, yes I have hundreds of used rims but 95% are warped very bad, cracked and broke, I hope it will be a product in demand, Bob

Do the 16" Fordite rims warp and crack more than the 25/27 17" rims?
I have three 17" rims without any warps or cracks & have seen several more good ones. Is there a difference in survival rate/shape for the earlier ones?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By ROBERT BERGSTADT on Friday, October 05, 2012 - 11:56 am:

Most of the 16" I find are broke, warped bad or cracked, the 17" mostly warped, Bob

Almost all Fordite rims of any size that I have ever seen, are semi-gloss. If the new ones are made of a buffable plastic, it should be no problem for someone to buff it to a gloss, if that is what they want.

The spiders snap right in like a glove, they are a very good fit, if someone wants them glossy all they have to do is wash them good with laquer thinner and paint the, mfg. says paint will stick just fine, Bob
best of all U.S.A. Made

Very nice rims. I had to build my own rim for my '16 from mahogany. I just can't get myself to paint it!

Please let us know how and where to order a rim? I'm tired of getting black goo all over my hands when it rains.

For the purist, the screws are a #9 X 7/8 oval head slotted wood screw. Langs has them, and I think RV has them too. Originally, they were raven finished.
