Barely readable label on front KW Igniter Co.
Has brass top and FORD script points. Contacts on bottom, S B T. Unknown if it works. Seems to have extra quality wood case. Ideas?
Most of the coils with this set up were used on stationary gasoline engines. These were quite common 40 - 50 years ago at farms auctions.
David:
The coil you have is a model MK manufactured by KW in Cleveland. The SBT markings are Spark Battery and Timer. As Darel stated, they typically were for use with stationary ("hit/miss") engines on oil rigs and farm chore use. I have an MK here in my hand that is in very fine condition with the decal on the front panel. The wood seems to be the traditional hard maple that KW used on all their coils but this thing is stained a rather deep red color and the finish was probably shiny at one point but is now "crazed" everywhere from age. It appears to be totally complete with all hardware. There should be a very thin hex nut (10-32) locking that point gap adjustment knurled nut on top. The other three connections on the bottom each have the same knurled nut but also the stud protruding from the coil box itself is double nutted. Do NOT power it up unless you have a suitable gap for the spark to jump or you can damage it. I also cannot see but it appears that there are no fiber washers to insulate the brass plate from the upper brass bridge part of your points assembly. That can cause the points to "latch" down and destroy the coil too. Don't ask me how I know. I have an adapter to test these sorts of coils in my Strobo-Spark.
