Mike,
A reasonable first step would be to measure the mag voltage as outlined in this thread:
http://www.mtfca.com/discus/messages/257047/282864.html?1334956032

And this link:
http://coildoctor.com/yahoo_site_admin/assets/docs/MAGNETO_TEST.58163152.pdf

This would help to isolate the problem the the mag or external wiring.

Jim

Or the switch!
I love my analog volt/ohm meter. It narrows down problems so fast.
Drive carefully, and enjoy, W2

No mag can also be caused by discharged magnets, too much magnet to field coil distance, a shorted field coil, and others. As suggested, check to see if you are getting any voltage before going any further.

You'd best find out why it won't run decently on battery first........then chase the magneto problem.
It's harder to chase two problems at the same time.

Mike- a word of caution to you and your friend...Do not allow 6v DC power to enter the AC mag post, or the damage will be terminal to the magneto, until a serious repair is done..

Accidental or intentional. It makes no difference.

well, we took the timer out, It was totally packed with grease, where did that come from, got it started, runs very good now, cleaned the plugs, drove it for the first time, very good day, still wont run on mag, guess thats next time thanks all

Ford recommended the timer be lubricated with Vaseline. Many people use grease with great results.

My first question would be "does it have a magneto?" Some have had the mag removed.
Best

Mike, how much endplay are you seeing in the crankshaft. Too much will cause your magneto to not work. Just a thought.

Has anyone mentioned cleaning the magneto post? KISS

Hal, Don't make this too simple. There are those of us that are easily confused.

Mike, I don't agree with the practice but I thought you might like to know, there are a lot of participants on this forum that think packing the timer with grease is the way to go. And I think it would be ok to do it as long as they're careful about what grease to use and change it at reasonable intervals. My '26 had a horrible miss until I cleaned out some very old hard grease that was packed into the timer and was actually lifting the roller away from the contacts. But rather than spend too much time dealing with an old Ford timer, I replaced the felt seal with a modern neoprene seal and changed to an Anderson timer. After putting in some rebuilt coils setup on a stroboscope and cleaning the mag post (which really didn't have much hanging on it) the car ran like a top until I split the top on one of the 2 piece valves. That was all on my '26. On my '22 the magneto quit working because I had .020 end play in my crankshaft. After pulling the 3rd main and having a shop build up the thrust on it by adding babbitt that car runs really great too. There darn old T's can be some tricky devils.
