Does anyone have or know where I can get a decent looking pair of 1922 New York plates? I've found single plates and some really poor plates, but nothing worthy of use. New york does not allow refinished plates for registration, so they must be original
I just bought a nice set of NY plates for my '26 on ebay for $20.00. Keep an eye out there are occasional deals. No big deal on the refinished plates, all you need to do is submit a photo to DMV for approval, a low quality shot and they do not know the difference. The main thing they are concerned about is the number to make sure it is not in use on a current plate.
I've been watching ebay as well, nothing from '22 recently. Thanks for mentioning they only need a photo, I thought you had to show them the actual plates....That makes it a little easier.
You could probably find a pair at Hershey.
Hal took the words right out of my mouth
I would be very surprised if you could not find a nice set 22 NY there.
PL8 Source probably has them. Run a google search for 1922 NY plates. They should'nt be that hard to find.
Pl8 source has one set but has some bullet holes in them. Done the google search and only found single and really poor plates. I really wish I could make it to Hershey this year, maybe someone there can pick up a good set for me.....lol. Thanks for the help so far though, at least now I know I can refinish a set that are at least in half way decent condition.
I don't collect license plates but my father does.
Your best bet is to deal directly with a collector of early New York license plates. Collectors usually have excess plates for selling or trading.
I would start here to find a collector in New York:

Whenever I hear of New York's silly law not allowing restored plates I wonder: How would they know?
Pat
I just went out to check my stash an I have a respectable NY 22 single :} I do know of another source here close to home but will probably not be able to check it out until after Hershey. If you want to give me a contact cell I will make an effort to see what is available at Hershey and call you for approval. "You will pay what I pay plus postage from near Scranton, PA" No guarantees but I'll give it a shot since I enjoy the swap meet more when I'm lookin for something specific and always happy to help another T'er out. Your call, let me know,
This is why I love this forum, Thanks for the info. ALPCA is one site i havent found yet. Dick, my # is 716-796-8586. I'm sure we can work something out.
At the time I put YOM plates on my 28 A, Calif would not allow restored plates. I don't know if this is still true BUT I showed them my plates and the clerk said "wow those are in nice shape" I replyed that I got lucky. In truth they were restored, but I was not asked that question.
Bill
I have a large collection of NY tags,, Its very possible that I may have a natch set,,,, catch is I'm now at my winter place,,,,,,,, if you can wait till spring I may be able to help. You can now use restored vintage rags in NY
I looked for YOM plates for my '24 before the internet was in widespread use. I bought a copy of Hemmings and sent a letter with a SASE to every license plate collector who advertised, asking for a list of the numbers of any 1924 Missouri plates they had. (Couldn't have a number that was in use, so had to run all the numbers by the Dept of Revenue until I found one I could use.) Internet makes it easier, but there may well be collectors who aren't on line.
I had a hard time finding a '24 Alabama plate for my T. A restored one on ebay went for over $400 bucks, I kept a look out and after about a year, found a fixer-upper for much less. Gerald Thiele restored mine and did a beautiful job at a more than reasonable price...here is the before and after.
Bob
I've seen Gerald Thiele's work at Chickasha. It's gorgeous.
I looked for a '27 Florida plate for my T and refused to pay the ridiculous prices they were asking for them. Good thing too because there was one under the rear seat! I had the car for two years before I got around to taking the rear seat out so I could store a few spare parts under it before a tour!
Check the antique car classifieds I found a guy with a set of 14's at a fair ti a little high price. They can be tough at NYDMV but mine passed. I have only seen 1 other set, but they didn't pass, so I guess I did ok!!
I had been toying with getting a set (Califunny does require a matching set) ever since I bought the '24 coupe. I wasn't willing to pay the prices for any I found, not at swap meets, not at eBad, because there were just too many other things I wanted to buy. About a weak ago, I was digging for something I knew I had for one of my upcoming projects. I found a matching set, 1924 Cal, that I forgot I had. Pretty rusty, but restorable. And as I recall, for some years now, Califunny does allow restored plates.
Good luck with your search!
Drive carefully, and enjoy, W2
There are few paired 1922 NY plates on eBay that aren't too expensive.
http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=1922+license+pair+new+york&_sacat=0&_odkw=19 22+license+pair&_sop=15&_osacat=0&_from=R40
The second set and the last set "might" be approved. The rest are questionable. They cab be real buggers about the condition!
The above plates passed NYDMV approval.
Not N.Y., but I have a really nice '22 Colorado pair for sale. . .
Rich, I did see those pairs on ebay but was concerned of the condition. Now that I know I can have Gerald restore them and get them to pass NYSDMV I may go that way if nothing comes through at Hershey.
I was looking for a '21 California motorcycle plate for a bike I have - I found one that was restorable in eBay, I was fine until someone started bidding it stratospheric. After it closed, one of the plate sellers I had been looking thru, an alpca member to boot, sends me an email, he told me he would sell me "a plate in identical condition to the one on eBay" for $100 over what that one's closing bid was... --grrrrr--
My biggest problem is finding someone who can do the early California porcelain plates - I have one for the '15 that has a clear number and is in amazing good shape, but only one...
