I'm in the process of rebuilding the generator on my '26 and have a question on the gear and pin that holds it on. I bought a new keyway and pin but I'm a bit concerned with the fit. The gear fits on the shaft snug and there is no play in the keyway but the pin slides in real easy and I'm worried it would come out. Are these supposed to be flared on each end with a punch or do I need to get a roll pin that would fit tighter? First Model T and this is a whole new ball game for me.
Make sure the pin is peened on both ends so it can't come out. A roll pin is to hard/brittle to use there.

Listen to uncle Jack.
Use an original drive gear pin and peen both ends after installation.
A roll pin has no place in a Model T generator drive gear. Soon it will drop out and be rattling around inside the engine destroying something very expensive to repair.

Here is an old thread on the gear pin:

Thanks for the advice.
I used a roll pin on my '24 Speedster generator gear and it lasted about 1,000 miles. Fortunately, the broken bits ended up somewhere safe and have not caused any collateral damage.
Just an update on what I posted in the thread referred to above.
The Model T generator armature rebuilder I am currently using will install a new armature shaft for an additional cost of $15 as part of the total armature rebuilding procedure.

I used a regular pin, not a roll pin, on mine, and I peened over the ends. However, the gear was loose on the shaft, and no, I didn't forget the key! I wound up soldering it to the shaft, making sure that it was true. That way, it can still be removed easily with some heat. The trick was not to heat up the armature itself too much. Worked like a champ.
