No town of "Silver Lake" or "Sand Dunes" listed on Michigan DOT map. There is a Sand Lake, Sands, Sand Creek, Silver City, and Silverwood.
White Pages search didn't show a Thomas Shaw in any of these places.

Gary;
My exwife's family is from that area. Silver Lake is indeed a lake. The towns around there is Mears and Hart, Michigan. My '14 Touring was sold new in Hart, Michigan.
Hope this helps Don Watson.

Small world! My dad, my sister and I, and my sister's and my kids all went to an American Youth Foundation camp in Stony Lake Michigan, about 16 miles south of Silver Lake State Park (at various times from the 1920s up to six years ago). In 2006, our son was on the staff at camp, so we drove up to stay at a nearby campground, see him and vacation. On a whim, we stuck the T on the trailer and took it with us. It ended up being our transportation while we were there, and one day we set out to explore Oceana County. I'm pretty sure this was taken at Silver Lake.

Don, Looks like you got a good lead. Never dawned on me (duh)that you may have ment the lake or the state park. Silver lake state park is where all the sand buggies go to run up and down the dunes. I fished Lake Michigan out of Ludington several times and watched the buggies in the park having their fun.

Aren't the "Dune Scooters" there somewhere? I can remember riding the Dune Scooters in the fifties when they were converted thirties Fords. The rides were a lot more hair-raising then. I understand that there was a fatal accident at some point, and the rides are now much more sedate. Then, they raced up and down the dunes (backwards, sometimes). Now they just kind of drive around through the dunes.

There are dune scooter rides at Silver Lake and a couple other places along the lake shore. Many years ago I went on a dune scooter ride in what is now the Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore, recently voted the most beautiful place in America. I think the rides were discontinued when it got national park status.

Gary, I have always enjoyed that part of Michigan. As I said, my dad attended Camp Miniwanca on Stony Lake (and Lake Michigan - the camp is between the two) in the 1920s, I went in the 1950s, my sister in the 1960s, and our kids as they became old enough. As our kids began attending Miniwanca, Anja and I took our tent and camping gear and stayed at a campground near New Era. For a while, we went up there every year.

Holiday Campground near New Era:

Climbing Old Baldy, a dune in camp. (There was a time in my life that I could do this....)

Sunset over Lake Michigan:

Makes me want to go back.....

Gary, I should probably have specified that I like summer in that part of Michigan. On the other hand, I had a friend here in St Louis who retired and moved to Spring Lake MI. He told me, "I don't mind the cold. It's the heat I can't stand."

Dick, Spring Lake and Grand Heaven (next to each other) are beautiful areas. Being on the east shore of Lake Michigan they benefit from the lake by being about 5-10 degrees cooler in the summer than only a few miles inland. Also about the same amount warmer in winter till the lake ice forms. On the down side the lake effect snow machine hits them harder.
