Cleaned and blasted the oil pan and in the process I removed the plate above the drain plug. In the day, I'm sure the trap was necessary. But, I'm wondering because of the way the car will be used from now on is the plate necessary anymore?

Magnetic oil plugs are available. That would help the engine more than the trap, I guess?

The trap captures band lining material, cotter pins, safety wire and anything else that comes loose flies around inside the engine. I would rather have it than not.

I have a button magnet glued in the plug.

If its not broke dont fix it is my view. It can only help and not hinder.
Adding a magnetic
drain plug is that much better.
