I am looking for some hinges for a speedster project and saw these on ebarf. Being not too familiar with the early parts, I have a few questions;
Are there a left and right or are these both the same side?
It appears that these have detents for position. They have castle nuts instead of wing nuts. Would that work? Sorry about the small size pics. TIA troop
I tried to enlarge the pictures. I hope this works. Click here: troop

Ex, they should work OK. The bolt through the centre has a spring included to allow the screen to be shifted/angled. This is why there is a castle nut, because the nut is not done up tight it needs to be pinned.
Hope this helps.
Allan from down under.
Thanks Allan. So I guess a good sized wingnut should secure it. I want to be able to have it slant back a notch or fold forward much like an old jeep would have. troop
Troop,
You missed Allan's point--the hinge is under spring tension by a spring under the bolt. The castle nut is tightened enough so the spring hold the windshield in position, yet will yield enough to move the windshield to the next detent position. A cotter pin keeps the nut from loosening or tightening. The upper windshield will fold back at an angle, and fold forward and down sorta like the jeep.

You have to be careful about the location of the detents. Some years the windshields were positioned differently than others and as a result some of the hinges will not stop at the right position. Unfortunately, they all look so similar that unless you have a great eye for things like that the only way to tell the difference is when you have them next to each other. I believe the real problem is with hinges for '13 and '14. The hinge for '13 folds forward and the hinge for '14 folds back. To make things even more difficult, I believe the hinges for the other years are also different from both the '13 and '14 hinges.
I am working on a speedster that was found in a pasture. It has exactly the same windshield set upon it that is shown in your photograph. I have several extra hinges and if any of them would make a pair that would be usable for you, I would be glad to send them to you. I am curious to know how your dashboard is mounted to the cowl. My dashboard appears to be made from the kick board of an old piano and the connection to the cowl seems to be pretty flimsy. I am concerned that the drag on the windshield may pull it loose from the cowl. However, that didn't appear to have happened for the previous owner. Ed
Thats another part that struck me as a bit odd; the detents on the back side of the pair pictured are different. One set of detents has a "male" reciever and the other a female, or am I seeing things?
Ex,
1914s, for example, are the same, left or right. I have a Rands on mine. They are just "up" on one side and "down" on the other. A pair are the same. I imagine the others are the same way. That lets the windscreen move with the hinges rather than pinch itself.
I have seen them dimpled differently but that is probably just different lots.
