A few weeks ago I bought a '26 that has been sitting since the mid 40's. I bought it with the engine out and apart. Today I dropped the block off for the machine work and I'm wondering about the magnets. Do these need to be recharged, is there a way to test them? Can they be recharged once the drivetrain is back together? Still a lot to learn on these cars for me......thanks

Jim -- Do the magnets need to be recharged? Probably. Is there a way to test them? Yes. Can they be charged in the car? Yes. Is that the best way? No. The MTFCA Electrical manual explains all about it, for about 12 bucks.

Ron Patterson probably will offer to recharge your magnets individually while everything is apart. That is the best way to do it.

I recommend that you trade in your mag coil ring for a rebuilt one while it's accessible. Your mag will work much better and longer if you do. The two vendors usually recommended here are Wally Szumowski and R.V. Anderson. Do a Forum search for their contact info.

Jim,

This forum can be helpful and you can get a lot of good advice as were offered by Ron and Mike. But the best bet is to find a local T club and join. You will find that T folks are the salt of the earth and most will go out of their way to help you. Model T's are a different animal. That is why so many of us are addicted to them. I see that there are 6 clubs in New York. The local guys will guide you and help to point you in the right direction. I hope Steve Jelf will jump in and post what manuals that the major suppliers have for sale that will help. It is to late for me to look them up! That being said there is nothing like local help. I started in this hobby 35+ years ago and there were many who helped me along the way.
