I am in the process of building a new bed floor for my 26 roadster pickup truck. Since I have the body off the chassis and the bed off the body I am wondering if any of you have tried raising the body ever so slightly and then raised the bed a little bit more so you could eliminate having to put the metal box over the rear spring hump? We're only talking about a half inch of lift total to allow me to put a complete wood floor in.
Please let me know what you think. I know I am about to catch hell from all the purists out there but this is something I would like to try.

WHAT??? You can't do that!!

Just kidding, Bob . :-)

Seems to me it would have been easier for Henry to raise the bed a bit, rather than having to provide a hole for the spring. I don't know why he didn't do it that way in the first place.

Bob you do realize that the fenders are fastened to the side of the box. If you raise the box it will make it very difficult to mount the fenders to the running boards.

It will mess with the fit on splash shields, hood fit ,etc.

The entire universe may unravel!

According to Webster on-line, "ravel" means to undo. But, "unravel" means to undo, or pull apart?
So, "unravel must mean to undo undo in order to undo? Or is that "undo" again?

See? It is happening already!

Don't mind me, I am only slightly crazy.

They even let me out of my cage occasionally.
Drive carefully, and enjoy, W2

Bob, I don't have an original bed, so I had some freedom. But I have been building mine to do just that---get it above the rear spring cross member. It does leave a rather short sided bed (at least in my wife's and my eyes) to still make it look right, but it sure beats having a useless hump in the middle. If I remember right, I used 2x3's standing on the tall side, then built various 1x lumber for cross members. That allowed me to plank the floor with no hump.

As for the fender mounting issue, I made my own brackets that support the fender by itself. Then the bed is free to come off if needed without disturbing anything else.

BTW, my car is far from being show quality, its a Canadian '25 touring that was cut off and made into a truck. The original homemade bed was very rough and cobbled so I scrapped the whole thing and started from scratch. 7 Years later I am still building the bed, LOL.

Here is a pic of the old bed---it looks decent in the pic, but it was really rough---didn't even have a tailgate that opened.

The 25 and older fenders mount different than the metal PU bed ones on the 26-27, unless the bed is not metal but wood on yours. I think you might be able to adapt it in someway if its not for show. That's the fun of the hobby.

Mine doesn't sit on the frame either. The previous owner put it up on 2x4's standing on edge like that so the bed wouldn't have to be notched to clear the original fender brackets. I will probably keep this when I rebuild the bed, but for now it's just a fun beater to practice driving with. Someday though, it'll be pretty...
