I had my doubts on the Scat crank being forged in China and finished in US. My day job deals with Chinese Iron on a daily basis and I do not enjoy the problems we have with it. I have to admit the Scat crank has got to be a very good piece since it finished the Melbourne to Moscow trip. My next engine for myself will have one in it. I told Constantine that it would make a believer out of me if it finished with out breaking. There has been a lot of new cranks made through the years and a few years later and miles we find which ones do not hold up to the test. Since there was talk lately about the Scat and fitting the irons, I thought I would put this out there.

Do you know how many miles Constantine drove for the trip? I wonder what the time or distance test" of a good vs a bad crank is (or is the only test when one joins the 2piece club)?

Not to change the subject, but many years ago, we used a lot of Chinese structural pipe at my job, because the price was right. That stuff would dull a cheap Porta-Band blade in no time flat. Sometimes in as little as one cut. It would cut fine, then hit something that practically took the teeth off the blade. The only blade we found that would last cutting that stuff was high dollar big name bi-metal blades. I'm sure some Chinese steel is fine, but this stuff must have been made from old box cars with bits of taps and easy-outs thrown in for good measure.

Rob, I heard 10,000 miles and another time I heard 18,000, he emailed me today and said there was another 1400 on it since Moscow heading to the Ukraine. He also said that he wanted to part with it since he was done with the trip and it would cost to much to ship it back home.

I'm somewhat saddened to hear he will part with the car (although I've parted with some great cars for less of a good reason). Royce, is this one coming back to you?

What did you coat the inside of the block with? I was thinking about a motor winding spray but I wasn't sure it would hold up in a hot oily environment.

Shucks,drive it as close to alaska as ye can and haul it that short distance there and drive it home by south america.shipping should be a bit cheaper that way.

The engine he ran in it was a 26-7 Scat std.,280 Stipe,J&M machine drums,Z head,dynamic balanced, with the serial numbers from the 13 engine on it for the different Visa he had to get for the car. The 13 engine got a 280 stipe in it also, I think he hauled it with him the whole time for a spare.It ran the original Kevlars the whole trip.

If he lets the car go, I suspect he will regret it later. But another consideration, is that the car may be worth more money where it is?
