What would make my right front outer (small)Timken roller bearing dent? I took off the wheel to change the tire and saw a few tiny metal shavings. Further inspection did not reveal where the shavings actually came from, but I noticed the Timken was slightly dented on one rim. It still rolls just fine. I am afraid to put it back on.

As I was taking the Timken off, I made a mental note that when I unscrew the bearing, it came unscrewed with too much ease. Could I not have had it tight enough? Could I use the slightly dented Timken if I put it back on tight? Any thoughts? Thank you for your feedback.

If the "dent" is on the cage and not one of the rollers, the bearing can still be used. That is, of course, if the rollers are free to turn on their own. Clean all the grease from inside the hub and off/out-of the bearings. If you do have metal particles, you want those cleaned out before re-assembly. Inspect the race and roller bearings carefully. There should not be any pitting or galling.

The bearings use "zero" preload. That is, there should not be any play in the bearing when you move the wheel. It also means that there shouldn't be any force applied to tighten the bearing. But you do want squeeze the new grease out from between the rollers and race to get a good "feel". Do this by tightening the bearing slightly then spinning the wheel. Loosen the bearing then adjust to zero preload.

I think "dented" could mean several things. How about some good close-up pictures so we know what we're dealing with?

As for easy unscrewing, it should be easy. It has grease all over it. When installed, it should be only tight enough to eliminate any wobble. It shouldn't be tight enough to damage the bearing.

Here are some close ups. The primary dent is at the top. Thanks again for your feedback.

Simply dropping them a concrete floor will do that. As long as the cages do not grip the rollers but allow them to roll free without drag there should be no problem.
Did you check that the "tiny shavings" aren't from the hubcap onto the hub threads? Any irregularity there will shave off metal from the hubcap threads.

The shavings were thin metal about 1-3 millimeters long and or wide. Only a few. But enough to make me wonder. The rollers do roll free so I will put the wheel back on the car and test drive it around the neighborhood then take the wheel off and check for shavings. Thanks! Bob
