I got a complete set of AC small drum brakes off ebay. They arrived Friday, today I bead blasted and painted, plan on installing them Sunday. They don't look like they had much use so may not have been on the car very long. Sometime this winter I plan on replacing the lining with something more water proof.
Makes me wonder why more people don't use the cable setup for the Rocky Mtns, would sure stop the fighting getting the equalizer setup. The ads I have seen for them show that they used cables not rods back in the day. I am in the process of rebuilding a Ruckstel, when I pulled the wheels off there were no parking brakes, guess they could not get the neutral and parking brakes setup using the equalizer.
Anyway enjoy the photos. The first ones are of them when I got done cleaning.

If you do your installation as produced you will not have a parking brake (your rear shoes are not there and the stock vintage AC works only off the pedal).

I plan on finishing up my AC brake installation tomorrow... I thought that the pulley + cable installation I am doing was my original design, but I see that is how AC did it also!

On RM brakes there is no "fighting getting the equalizer setup"... you just install it and use it. There is an interlock (slider) which RM makes which allows you to use the RM brakes as parking brakes also. I personally don't like that slider and always use my own design.

On my AC installation I have built up a parking brake interlock which I feel is clever, but alas no "fighting".

I like your woven linings, I bet they won't last a long time, but they should have a nice feel and be quiet.

It will be a while before my car is on the road, one job I still need to do is turn down some cast iron Jetta drums to fit the rear wheels... I figure that will give better braking.

If I get it finished tomorrow I'll take some photos.

TH

Jack, I think it mounts to the upper radius rod bolt. I will know tomorrow.

Sorry I should have made it more clear, the Ruckstell and Rocky's are on another car.

Re; "There is an interlock (slider) which RM makes which allows you to use the RM brakes as parking brakes also."
I will have to check and see if he has the slider.

The other end of the spring goes to the L shaped bracket on the pull lever, see No 15.

Mark, What size cable is your original AC unit using.

Mark,

Thanks for the pics. I like the "cable" option. I look forward to pics showing how you install them.

Rob

The cable is 1/4 inch. I don't know if it is correct as it looks a little large in the holders. I am thinking that I might replace it with the next size down later. I did make some new mounting bolts. I haven't decided if I am going to drill them for cotter pins or use lock washers.

Mark-
1/4" seems like overkill. I'm sure 3/16" would be plenty think enough.

Here is all I have about the installation:

can someone produce them and then sell them at a reasonable price?? that would be great!

They are made new. They don't come with the linkage just the brakes and mounting brackets. The new ones are meant to be use with rods but I think it would be easy to change the setup to use cables.
The instillation was easy. Keith, thanks for the instructions, they will still come in handy for the rest of the setup.
The hard part is setting the cable for slack. If you have too much loop in the original setup the cable pulls through even when the clamps are tight.
When I replace the cable (1/4 inch is too large) I am going to make a support where they pass over the anti-rattler for the parking brake rods. Oh, they do stop in reverse! :-)
I have added few more photos;

I think Snyder's list them and you can buy from the guy that makes them. Not sure if the price is current in the photo.

Today I replaced the cable with 3/16. Got dark as I was adjusting it so couldn't get any photos. The 3/16 does fit the clamps much better. The ends of the cable I soldered and put heat shrink tubing on. I measured twice and still managed to end up with just enough cable, one inch less and would not have worked :-).

Why do you think you need to replace the lining? I don't know their vintage, but many old linings perform better than the asbestos free replacements.

The linings is the "old" woven material, don't know if there even is asbestos in it. It will be good for a while but I will probably replace it with a lining with brass wire woven into it like what is used in Model A woven brake linings.
