Hi all,

Are there any differences in the hogs heads throughout the years? I have a 1919 engine (with starter), and a 1924 engine - just wondering if I can swap the hogs heads around.

Thanks
Greg

Greg,

I believe the answer to your questions would be Yes and Yes.
I.e. yes there were differences in the transmission covers and yes a starter 1919 hogs head [they were offered both ways that year and both styles would interchange but only the starter style would allow you to add the starter] should swap out ok with a 1924 hogs head.

If you look at online encyclopedia at: intro: http://mtfca.com/encyclo/intro.htm and the index at: http://mtfca.com/encyclo/index.htm . Just scroll down to the Transmission covers and click on them or the link here: http://mtfca.com/encyclo/S-T.htm#tran2 which has a great listing of changes.

Note based on where you live you may want information about the Canadian transmission covers. If so, once they were cast in Canada they would usually have a casting date. Initially the date numbers were in a row and later in a circle. Below is a photo posted by James Golden of a Canadian 1925 transmission cover with the C standing for 1925.

I cannot read the other numbers. 1923 was represented by an “A” and 1924 by a “B” etc. I looked but I did not find a photo of “Made in Canada” on the transmission cover/hogs head. I would have guessed they put that on the hogs head – but I may be guessing wrong – does anyone remember and/or have a photo handy of that?

Good luck with your car.

Respectfully submitted,

If the 1924 engine was made after july 17, (actually a 1925 model) the transmission cover has a cast rib that deflects oil back to the transmission = an improvement over the earlier style.

I believe the very early aluminum hogs heads are not interchangeable as they were narrower but other than that they are all interchangeable

The newer transmission covers after July 1925 had two ears to attach them to the back of the engine block. The Brake lever shaft was changed to locate it farther back in the casting to compensate for the larger brake drum. The Magneto post was upgraded to a threaded unit instead of the old one held in by three screws.
