I am trying to remove the king pin bolts on an axle that has not seen service for a long time. It’s rusty but not too bad. Since the spindles are free, the rust at the bolt head and threads is the problem. I have done the normal things like soaking them in penetrating oil and using a limited amount of heat on the axle and cold on the bolts. I also tried an impact wrench which worked to remove the nuts but not the bolts. This must be a pretty common problem and I hope there are some possibilities that have worked for others, short of cutting and drilling out the bolts.
I hate it when that happens!
Put the heat to them and as they start to get cool spray them with kroil or another good penetrant, the oil will be drawn in like solder. Always works for me though may take a couple of trys. Just be patient and it will work out. Nothing is hard about model T repair, just time consuming. Have fun, KB
If you find the secret of the ages, let me know. I have been at this for over forty years and am working on my third front axle that will NOT come apart. I have been soaking this thing in a variety of penetrating oils for over a year now. I have used the big torch tip on it three or four times. Breaker bars, cheater handles, the last one I had this bad broke my good breaker bar.
Fortunately for this one, the bushings are in very good condition. I can only guess that the king pins are okay. I cannot get them out to look at them. But they are tight and turn okay. I may just have to run them this way. And, no, I don't like the idea. But it is a pre'16.
Good luck!
Drive carefully, and enjoy, W2
