Hey all:

What are some tricks you guys have had with removing the Ruckstell bearing from the axle? I tried using a brass punch from the inside of the axle, pounding upon the notch plate, but to no avail. Only the side that I could reach budged - the other side stayed in place. Any ideas? Thanks.

Have you got the pointed bolts out of the housing?

Yes - there is only one, isn't there?

What bearing are you talking about. There is only one Ruckstell bearing. The P211 which is pressed onto the P139 Bronze Thrust Plate. The P147 Notch Plate is held in the Ruckstell housing by two locking screws. These must be removed before you can get the Ruckstell assembly out of the Ruckstell housing.

Glen:

I only found one locking screw and the P211 did not come out with the P139 - it is stuck inside the housing.

Tap it back in so it is all the way in, not cocked to one side. Stand the housing down on the floor with the big end down. Drop the clutch gear in so it goes through the lock plate. Put a socket too big to go through the clutch gear on the threaded end of an old axle. Hold it up high and drop it down through the tube. The lock plate will pop right out.

Jim, one of the locking bolts is also used to hold the shift lock on. If you have the shift lock removed you have only the bolt at the top of the housing to remove. The bearing (P211) should have been a press fit on the bronze plate.(P139) If it didn't come out with the bronze thrust plate the carrier on the thrust plate is probably pretty badly worn and will require replacement. If the bearing is stuck in the housing, so is the lock plate. The bearing will come out if you do what I said about dropping an axle down to pop it out.

Right on Stan.

I got the bearing and notch plate out. Thanks, Stan, for the great idea of using the axle. I actually found an old broom handle that I wasn't planning on using and put a larger washer on the end of it. I beat the heck out of the handle, but eventually the bearing and plate fell out. The bearing is in pretty good shape, as is the sliding gear, and I can use the opposite side of the notch plate as one side is worn.

Now it's time to clean up the rear housing and repaint.
