I am trying to help a friend identify some brackets similar to the ones for sale on Ebay. Were these brackets Ford parts or are they an accessory item? Will they fit on a Model T and, if so, what year? http://www.ebay.com/itm/400329635391?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m143 8.l2649

I have tried to find these on the Forum and in Bruce McCalley's Encyclopedia but I may be using the wrong search term.

Thanks for the help.

I've never seen any of those on a Model T.

I believe those were used on Canadian Model Ts and I'm not sure what years. They could also be purchased as accessories for US cars.

I think you could get them as accessories, but the Buick and Dodge we had at the museum I worked at had them as standard. I have never seen an American Ford with those.....

Dennis as mentioned above Ford of Canada 1920-22 or so used a top bracket that looked a lot like that. For additional information please see:

Posting has photos and part numbers and of course additional questions.

But Ford USA did not use that style.

Thanks for the information. The brackets I was asking about are located near Edmonton, AB so they may likely fit a Canadian built Model T.

Denis, this type of top clamp is common in Australia. They should fit US Ts, but you may have to modify the body bracket. If I am correct, US Ts have a simple saddle in which the bows rest. As such, the mounting bracket protrudes from the side of the car far enough for the saddle to allow the bows to rest on it. With the opening type, the body bracket is terminated flush with the straight side of the clamp, so the bows can pass it to rest in the clamp. So you would have to shorten the body bracket to use the clamps, a one way step.

Further, Standard US top bows pile up on the saddle. Most clamps have their mountings set part way up the inside straight section, so your stack of bows will ride lower down. This may look weird/may not work. The ones I have on my tourer are solid nickel castings. The clamping piece is riveted low down on the clamp so the hood bows ride reasonably high. Being riveted on, I could shift the clamp a bit to adjust the height the bows ride. Fortunately, by the time I had found 5 clamps, I actually had two set at the same height.

Hope this helps.

Allan from down under.

Here is another 'style' that appear to attach to an existing socket, I suspect

I think my '16 Dodge Bros touring uses #227s (they are buried in storage, so I can't verify that). These were used on many different open cars, and apparently were made by the same manufacturer, as I have seen numerous part numbers on them at swap meets.
