David Skinner passed away last Saturday aged 75 after a 3 year battle with cancer.

David was the first person to take me out in a T Ford, back in 1967 when I was a Ford-struck teenager.

He was been a active member of our club, The Model T Ford Register of Great Britain, throughout its 50+ years, and started playing with Ts back in the days when you could find one in almost any farmer's barn and put it on the road as found. You could also (as he did) buy a Bugatti for less than a cheap new car. He once claimed on this Forum 'I've had 30 Ts in various states of rot & 4 Bugattis'

A talented classical pianist as well as a skilled engineer, he hid his considerable intellect behind a modest charm, easy-going manner and gentle dry humour that endeared him to everyone he met.

His son Richard has followed in his footsteps with Ts and Bugattis, and so has grandson Ashley - David was very proud to have 3 generations in the T Register. He leaves behind his wife of 49 years Moira, Richard and wife Jane, daughter Anny and husband Paul, and grandsons Ashley, Daniel and Michael.

For those in the UK, his funeral will be at Southampton Crematorium on Tuesday 30th at 11am.

A true gentleman, we will miss him.

Jem,

My thoughts and prayers go out to his friends and family during this time of loss.

And once again I am reminded that I am only the steward of my Fords and that one day hopefully they will be passed on to someone else who will take care of them. I also noticed a common theme that several folks have shared. As you mentioned, David was the first person to take you for a ride in a Model T when you were a teenager. And if you were like me as a teenager – I had a lot rough edges (I still do) but he cared enough to invest some of his time with you. And I’m sure many of the folks he took for a ride or took time to answer questions etc. never went on to become part of the hobby. But I am also sure several others are probably in the Model T Ford Register of Great Britain [http://www.modeltregister.co.uk/ ] because of David and others that took time to answer some of our common “newbie” questions etc. Hopefully when we hang up the car keys (or ignition plug for the early cars) for the last time folks will be able to look back on us with fond memories of first rides, forgetting to turn the gas on and wondering why it won’t start and then laughing until it hurts and hundreds of other good times.

Respectfully submitted,

Hap l9l5 cut off

David and I sent regular e-mail back and forth. His torpedo which began its life as a tourer has a s/n about 1200 later than mine, so we compared a lot of notes. When I turned 50 he strongly encouraged me to have a colonoscopy. He would regularly "nag" me about it. I dutifully told him when I scheduled the appointment... and he e-mailed me afterward to check up on me wanting to know my results! He was genuinely relieved when I reported my relatively clean bill of health.

I will miss his encouragement, jokes and political humor.

After David finished his torpedo, it was on the cover and featured in December 1911 issue of "The Automobile" a British Magazine. It was a pleasant surprise when an issue arrived in my mail box.

We never met face to face, or even had a phone conversation, but I always considered him a friend and I will miss him.

My thoughts and prayers go to his family.

Rest in Peace, David.
