Hello,
A friend of mine has a rim problem. The rim lock has failed. What do you think about cleaning and welding the loose part from inside the rim? Or do you have a better solution?

I would not have thought it would not be too difficult to remake the rim lock again the same or maybe a better/easier design, The split makes it easy to mount the tire fixing it solid may make tire changing difficult or damage the tire mounting it.

what are you calling the "inside" of the rim?

I think you mean the felloe side ( rim lock side) not inside the actual rim where the tire/tube is. but some may take it that way.

I have used silver braze on these before. Clean it well, apply appropriate flux, and use 45% silver braze with an oxy./acet. torch. It will wick in the joint and form a nice clean bond.

It could and should be welded from inside the rim. If you clamp the latch in place and vee out the joint to be welded before welding and then grind smooth with an angle grinder after welding, you will end up with a smooth, invisible, attractive, original looking weld that will be stronger than the original. I've done several locks and the rim mounting tabs as well - welded from the inside. The flap (if chosen) will protect the tube from the weld, if not ground smooth.

I have brazed some and welded some rim repairs. Both ways seem to work fine.
Even if I had good spares, I would fix and use that rim. Repairing T parts is part of preserving them.

Steve, rim flaps are made to be used in split rims, to protect the tube from the split and possible chafing. They are not necessary in clincher rims which do not have a joint to worry about.
