I am working on a replacement body for my 1914 Touring and the body I have had trim boards over the doors. These were moved to the previous owners new swedish body and thus i do not have templates. Could anyone provide the thickness of these boards? There may be some variation as they are not original to the factory supplied car. As well, are they typically the same width of the body wall, or are they a little wider? What type of radius is on the edges?
Thanks for any guidance.
Billy, My top-of-body-panel trim is 3/16" thickness and not quite as wide as the top horizontal of the panels as your picture depicts. There is also a slight radius on the inside and outside top that can be attained by simple sanding. I don't know what kind of wood was used. Left over hickory spoke wood??
If you are going to paint them, you can get poplar strips at Home Depot. I would use oak or hickory and varnish them.
I was going to use Cherry in order to match the firewall. Nothing is going to be "correct" since they are all aftermarket anyway.
I have a set of original wood body caps. They are 7/16 thick.
Ed;
How wide are they? What kind of wood, do you think?
They are 1-3/8 width, I do not know the wood, maybe red mahogany?
Here is a close up of the wood grain, with a flash. They are darker in color in natural light. The wood looks similar to the wood used in 1913 and earlier coil boxes.
Those are nice, if you have chips or scratches on the top of the doors and don't want to repaint them.
Here is an adv from 1915, notes mahogany finish.
Ed -- The grain in your close-up pic does appear to be mahogany.
