qouted 800.00 for the core and 250.00 to install macs gets 630.00 for a new one so be ordering a new one,$$$ ouch!! but it will be done then, distilled water and forum recommended anti freeze, taking my time and do a really good block flush, new hoses and all...next to do??? LOL
Order a head gasket while your at it. Pull the head and drill the steam holes. More often than not, they are the first to clog and will also cause over heating. A chemical block flush will not always clear them out.
The steam holes are 1/4" - I drilled mine out to 9/32". They were clogged. As I recall, there were five of them ... but then I am old

I ordered one direct from Bergs. Never regret that as it pays off every time I go for a drive. Bergs quality is first rate and made in America.
will do ,i'll order a head gasket tonite, head gasket, copper or?? also need a exaust gasket, i am gonna let it sit in the shop till i get it right, not gonna shortcut anything, just want it reliable for around town and parades and beer store runs with my dog
I save some water from the dehumidifier for batteries and radiators. Same as distilled water and is free (or at least already paid for). OK distilled water is cheap but this water is cheaper, and available.
Gary, I wondered about that... but decided that the air drawn over the coils would contaminate the water. Am I nuts?
Steam holes? Different than the water jacket?
Looking at Mac's website, they stock two 17-23 flat tube radiators. One is $650, and the other is $800 plus. Both made in the USA...what is the difference? Anyone know?
I tried to order the cheaper one about a year ago and they told me it was out of stock and no longer being made. I ended up buying a Brassworks from Langs.
My mistake, I tried to order one of the cheaper 24-27 tall radiators from Mac's they said that those were out of stock and no longer being made. I don't know about the 17-23 radiators.
The steam holes (five) are in the block and head. Match the head gasket up to each to locate where they should be. Most of the time they are completely clogged on engines that have been in service for a while.
I'm fairly certain the best value for the bucks when it comes to radiators is Berg's Radiators. Super nice, super service, super quality, super response. They build the radiators. When you buy from places like Mac's, Snyder's or Lang's you're dealing with a middle man. Just my opinion.
On the other hand, Mike, if it WEREN'T for middle men parts wouldn't be NEARLY as readily available as they are now.
If someone tried to do all their own marketing they wouldn't have time to make product.
The more folks who profit makes it better for everyone.......and competition helps keep prices where they oughta be too.......
And when you have a problem the middle man is a road block. And you're less likely to have a problem with a Bergs radiator because he deals directly with the end user. That extra link the middle man provides is just one more opportunity to block the information the manufacturer should be aware of in order to assure quality product. Another benefit of dealing directly with the manufacturer is not having to pay the margins necessary to run a 2 step distribution process. And that's always a benefit.
Don't argue with me on this Craig. I haven't got the knowledge or the strength to really make a point out of what I'm saying. I just enjoyed working with Bergs and so I'm prejudice when it comes to my opinion of them. ;-)
it goes both ways in my opinion, the convenience of the suppliers makes it great for the smaller guys making parts. but its nice to go to the source for some things.
LOL Mike and I agree with Matthew too.......
Sometimes I go straight to the source simply because I was self employed long enough and like to see the source make a few extra $$$ too.......
I guess I am not wise, but never heard of the steam holes before, or should I say haven't noticed them before. They really will cause over heating if plugged?
Tim
Yes Tim, they really will cause the car to over heat if blocked
