I finally got the rods and mains fitted fitted up. WHAT A JOB! sure does take a long time but it was fun. now i am getting ready to install the pistons. my question is, what is the oval slot on the side of the valve cover? i cant find anything in the repair manual about it. thanks. Ken
Ken, that is to for the throttle rod that goes thru the block to the carburetor.
Gordon. thanks for your reply.is there a grommet or anything that covers the rod when installed? thanks Ken
Nope.
Ken,
If you look on the right (drivers side in the US) of the block you will see there is a hole there also where the throttle rod goes. Both the cover hole and the block opening are just open to the air. Kind of contrary to how an engine is sealed up today but the early T's had no cover at all over the valve spring area.

Way back I converted a '27 from vaporizer to NH. The valve cover had the oval hole in it and the gasket didn't. Leave it to the Old Man to use everything up that's still on the shelf.
looks like ford used that as a breather as well! maybe i could use a breathable felt or something there? don`t like the idea of an open inner that i spent so much time cleaning before the assembly work. Ken
Don't know if it's worth the effort. Nobody's complained about dirt going in that hole yet.
1927 cover was hole less for the vapo carb. troop
I believe I've seen some with a round hole too.
Mine, a '27 engine, had an oval hole in the metal cover. Was it replaced prior to converting to the NH? Don't know. Old paint, all the same color.
Ken,
The only way for dirt going through that hole, to get into your engine, (other than the valve area), is for the dirt to then go through the two small drain holes in the valve galley. Not a big issue. You'll get far more dirt passing through your oil filler/breather cap.
