Trying to determine if the paint on my 22 t is original. Did Ford use a primer our was the paint directly to metal? The head lights appear to have a gray primer. Not so on the fenders.what do you look got to determine original paint?

Ford used a primer but not grey. It was black and sometimes a brown color. And it wasn't on all parts. I think only the body was primed. The fenders and hood were not primed. They were dipped and baked (twice). The engine pan and rear end were also dipped but I'm not sure if they were baked but I imagine they were to save drying time.

My second '23 Touring had a lot of grey primer but only on the front end sheet metal. Why is lost in time but it wasn't original. When I stripped the green off the engine I found the grey on it too. Finally got down to the thin, washed out black I've heard so much about. Under the grey on the sheet metal was bare metal so I'm guessing it was a preservative for stored parts. Maybe the stuff was replaced after an accident.
