OK still removing engine and almost there. Just a couple more questions and then shes out. On removing (and installing), when I remove the 4 bolts holding the drive shaft tube to the 4th main, how do you keep the alignment so when I pull the motor the bearing doesnt shift and let the weight of the tranny put all that stress on the crank.

#2 when I disconnect the wishbone from the oil pan, can I just let it drop or should I keep it supported up as to not twist things on the front axle?

Thanks all

#1 -- don't worry about it.

#2 -- Don't worry about it. You'll probably need to lift the wishbone up with a jack when reassembling it.

When I removed my engine, I just let it drop. Not sure if it's hard on anything, but I had no problems. I would have tried to remove the radius rod completely, but someone had welded it to the axle.

On the rear, I just tie a rope between the frame to hold the drive shaft up. I don't like putting undue stress on the spring eyes. Probably doesn't mean anything but I do it anyway.

Seems like I recall always having to pull the front radius rod down and block it to give clearance for the motor to come out. If your's just drops, something is terribly loose.

If your wish bone is welded to the axle you might look for a different axle and wish bone while your at it. Just for safety sake. Just a thought.

The drive shaft tube cannot drop more than about 2 inches if you leave the parking brake shaft in place.

The front radius rod (wishbone) will most likely need to be pulled down to clear the rear part of the crankcase when you slide the engine forward.

The weight of the transmission won't break or bend the crankshaft. Main cause of problem is when you are driving if it is out of alignment it will continue to bend over and over as the engine turns causing metal fatigue Follow the instructions in the book "Engine" for installation of the 4th main bearing. When you overhaul the engine check the alignment of the crankcase on a jig (inquire from local club members as to where you can find the jig) Then straighten the crankcase, if necessary, and turn the engine nose down and support in such a way that the crankshaft hangs. Start the two bolts into the crankcase to hold the 4th main and be sure it will slide up and down easily on the transmission driven shaft. If it does, the alignment is correct.

The most important thing is to get the mtfca engine and transmissions book. It very good in it's explanation regarding removing and working on your engine. Good Luck with your project.
