We stayed an extra day (the T tour ended Friday evening). Great tour! Finally had the K running well in time for the family to tour when they flew in Wed (thanks Stan Howe and those on the tour who helped, turned out to be really fine rust in the tank).
I'll start home this afternoon, and need to be in western KY to meet a client Tuesday afternoon, so a leisurely pace today and Monday). Any suggestions of old car sites to take in?
Looks like I'll take I-16 to I-75 to I-24. Then I need to be at the airport in Evansville IN Tuesday afternoon, then drop into western KY. After that, back to I-64 to I-70 across MO and north on I-29 to Nebraska.
Sure be a lot easier to head south for the winter (darn work).
Rob
Hey Rob I was in Firth Nebraska yesterday. I think that is in your backyard. I called but you didn't answer. I thought you were on a tour somewhere, and I see you were. If you are coming through St. Louis give me a call.
Herb
You should be coming right through Cleveland, TN While traveling on I-75. I live about 20 miles before you get to I-24 which is in Chattanooga, TN
Rob we have Auto World by Backer just a mile from my home, as I was in the Backer family for years its no problem to see John Danuser Fulton Mo 6 miles of I-70 on Hyway 54
Rob,
You will be going really near to 2 fantastic collections. I think both are a must see.
First, in Chattanooga, Corky Coker has a great collection of cars and motorcycles at the Coker Tire Headquarters. See http://tours.cokertire.com/ We visited this one on one of the tours I was on and it was a highlight of the tour. The website says its open Monday to Friday 10am to 2pm.
Next, in Nashville a must see is the Lane Motor Museum, a collection of over 330 really unique vehicles, most of which you will never see anywhere else. Check out http://www.lanemotormuseum.org/ .It's closed on Tuesday and Wednesday but open from 10am to 5pm all other days. It's a super collection and you could easily spend 3 or 4 hours or more there.
Enjoy.
Charlie
Thanks guys.
John, I've stopped in Fulton before, a very nice collection and display.
Robbie and Charlie, I made it to Monteagle Mountain TN, just past Chattenooga. Wish I had stopped earlier but with the 32 foot trailer I was looking for an easy place to pull into. Wish I had planned on the Comer collection earlier .
Herb, I'll give you a ring tomorrow.
Thanks again
Rob
On my iPad somewhere in Tennessee
Pic of Gator trying to talk my wife and daughter into something, not sure what.....
Darn auto correct, should have said "Coker", not Comer!
Rob
While on I-24 when you see the down town Chattanooga sign your only 6-8 blocks from the tire store, plenty of parking right next to the building. Easy in and out from I-24 pretty much a long U turn.
See what you can while you can I was with in a rocks throw from the Great Lakes twice, I've regretted not driving on up to see them both times, I said maybe next time, that's been 8-10 years ago I've never went back...!
Also been invited to the Corker barn 3-4 times I'm going the next time...
Rob, when you get to Mound City MO. on I 29, if you have a minute to stop, give us a shout. Have a safe trip! Dave
Herb, strange as it may seem, I have been to Firth myself. Back in the late '90's my now deceased buddy Bill Brandon and I worked for a house mover based at Johnson NE. for a few years. At one time or another, we hit almost all of those small towns in that area, including larger ones such as Lincoln, Nebraska City, Syracuse, and others. Dave
I have been to Coker's home place. Very nice automobiles. Harold wants me to come work for him. Lol Corky beat me to a nice selection of cars he called a barn find in Chattanooga but we still get along fine. Rob ,I know you said you were going over Monteagle mountain which means you have already passed Chattanooga but if you ever get back this way you need to at least stop by Coker Tire stare he has an amazing collection of motorcycles there as well as a variety of antique cars....even a few Volkswagens.
Be Safe,
Rob, drive safe and enjoy the ride.
Rob,
You might like the Swope Auto Museum in Elisabethtown, KY. It sounds like it might be a little out of your way, though? There are a few Model T's if I remember correctly.
Willis
Rob ,
I almost forgot, If you are going through Nashville you need to stop by Don Meadows museum it is awesome. I think he has over 60 model T's and lots of brass on display.
I borrowed this from MR Simpers who was in the Natchez Trace Tour around May of last year
"The high point of Sunday was a visit to the car collection of Don Meadow's in White Bluff, TN about 38 miles from Franklin. What we came upon was amazing. Meadows had just completed a new metal building that had to be 100 feet wide and over 200 feet deep. He then moved in all of his cars just for us to see. What was in this building was mostly Model A's and Model T's.
We're not talking small time here; I mean a lot of cars. How about four 1909 Model T's; how about three Model A mail trucks; and on and on it went. There was a scattering of other cars in the new building. It appears that he was buying everything he saw – a lot of the cars still had the “lot numbers” from his auction purchases.
The big building was overwhelming in itself, but there were other buildings, sheds, and containers. The smaller buildings were packed fender to fender with cars. In one was a 1908 Model “S” Ford and a 1906 Ford. There was a shed full of wheels and rims; sheds full of barn fresh incomplete cars; containers of old Ford sheet metal – what a candy store."
If he doesn't have a K I am sure he would love to have Rob stop and emmpty the trailer.
