When I bought my touring it came with a twenty-foot "restoration". It looks OK from twenty feet away or more. But when you get up close you start noticing the Phillips screws, the wires with plastic insulation, and other little embarrassments. One small chore I did this past summer was replace the in-your-face modern bolts holding the steering column support with these carriage bolts. Yes, I know rivets were used here originally, but these will have to do.
The next thing I want to correct is this.
What are the proper fasteners at the back of the splash apron?
I believe, round head screws with square nuts and split type lock washers but, let's see if others agree.
Paint 'em black and you're good to go.
I would just leave them alone, unless you wanted to put the lock washers underneath the apron. Otherwise, paint it black and leave it be.
