Recently I purchased a 12 tooth pinion gear on Ebay for 10 bucks plus 3 more for shipping. I understand these were possibly sold by Ruckstell, rather than Ford. It is used with a 39 tooth ring gear (from a 3 to 1 gear set) to produce a 3.25 to 1 ratio. When my late father and I restored his father's 27 coupe in the late sixties, we installed a 3 to 1 gear set and over the years, were never disappointed with performance. I am restoring the car again and didn't want 4 to 1 gears, but was looking at a little more gear; something no higher than the 3.63 standard ratio. With the price of new gears, I was happy to go with a 3.25 to 1 ratio for ten bucks. I already had the 39 tooth ring gear installed, anyway.
I forgot to mention that the gear has no noticeable wear and since the car it is going into won't be driven much anymore, it should work just fine.
Original Ruckstell gear sets are clearly marked with the "Ruckstell" name.
I think the ruckstell Gears are 13 tooth?
dont u have to split the rear end to get a 13 tooth in and out?
Yes.
Mike-
Yes. You do have to split the rear end to get a 13 tooth pinion in and out. I'd think you need to so the same for the 12 tooth. The ring gear need to be changed out and shimmed up anyway.
Terry-
I have 3:1 gears in my touring and runabout and like 'em both. If the touring is loaded up, it is a little steep. I have a 12 tooth pinion that I thought I'd put in next time I had the Ruckstell apart.
Let us know how you like the 3.25:1

The Ruckstell 13 tooth pinion was made to work with a special 40 tooth ring gear- not the Ford 39 tooth ring. Look on the back side of the pinion- it may be stamped "13-40" with the Ruckstell logo.
I have a 12 tooth Pinion gear (from Chaffin's) and a 40 tooth stepped Ruckstell ring gear. I intend to put them together for a 3.33 to 1 ratio Ruckstell. Has anyone else done this?

Bob, You can check the mesh with Prussian blue or similar. If it looks good and feels smooth, it should be fine.
Ruckstell made the 13/40 ring and pinions. The modern 3/1 gears are 13/39. The 12 and 13 tooth pinions will work with either ring gear. We have the 9, 10, 11 and 12 tooth pinions made for us.
