Oh I have screwed up....like you wouldn't believe....
My deck lid had a small dent in it, maybe at the most 3" in diameter, but it was a deep dent and deep enough I thought I could shrink out with a little heat and a hammer. Well I got it a little too hot and the dent grew like crazy causing the lid to warp I should have just used filler and cold worked it out
How are you guys welding on your bodies and what are you using. Is anyone here really good at welding on this thin tin and could I send my lid to you? Does anyone have a spare fixer upper lid in so-so decent shape for sale?
I had to cut out the majority of the center of the panel to get the warp out, the x'ed box is what I cut out. Anyone have a piece of same thickness sheetmetal?
Patrick,
Do you know someone close by with an english wheel? Perhaps they could roll you a new piece.
Good Luck!
Now I see your picture...it shouldn't take much rolling!
Indeed! Any machine/fab shop with a roll press could make you a piece to weld back in if you give them the particulars and it wouldn't cost an arm and a leg.
Good luck!
I've been looking for a flat piece, the part I had to cut out is flat but I cannot find the correct gauge. What is the correct gauge on a 1923????
Try a side panel out of a clothes dryer.
What about....
I thought about calling Mark for one but I'd like to try to repair mine first.
The sheetmetal has to be free of rust or anything else for it to be heliarc/tig welded. James at Nolan's could do it once you get a replacement piece.
20 gauge, see if you can find a local sheetmetal shop that can cut you a new piece and weld it in. You might have to do some looking to find someone sympathetic with your problem.
I just picked up a bead roller at Harbor Freight off the sale table for $60... regular price $179 ( http://www.harborfreight.com/18-inch-sheet-metal-fabrication-kit-34104.html ). It comes with a set of flange rollers which would turn a flat panel into a piece ready for inserting into what's left of your lid. Remember you still need to braze it into the lid... can you do that and keep it flat?

Patrick,
I have a complete turtle deck with lid in good shape that I would sell very reasonably + Shipping send me a PM.
Mike
You may want to mic the thickness of the sheet metal and look up the actual gauge. I have a 1913 body here which seems to use 20 ga, and some pieces for a 23-25 Roadster which are 19 ga. The 19 gauge is not commonly available, but you can get it.
Have you watched Ebay? I know there are some lids on there right now advertised for the Coupe. I didn't check to see if they actually are Coupe, and didn't look for roadster ones.

I've got a whole very nice turtle deck.
